I believe it's official that Chapel hill's airport is closing. Would this be a site worth checking out for events?

Not that I've heard.
Link to news source?

It is used quite a bit by the university AHEC programs (loosely affiliated with that...) to reach satellite offices across the state. I can't imagine them closing, although ever since I've been here, the complaints have increased over larger airplanes landing.

I believe it's been extended to mid 2004 or early 2005. But I am not sure.

That might be a good site.

However, I'd be willing to bet that if they ran off the flying club that was keeping the airport in the black they won't be all that interested in having us there. From reading the story it sounds like politics and enviromental wackiness is behind the decision to close the airport in the first place.

I just don't get it. :whoknows: rant mode on. People buy a house close to the airport and then cry and whine about the airplanes. Clue: If you don't want to hear airplanes don't live close to an airport......duh. rant mode off.

They have been talking about closing Horace Williams airport since I started flying in 1988. It hasn't happened yet (obviously). I would expect them to keep it open long after the date in '05.

Not likely we'll get in there. If you want to read about what's going on with that property, go here http://www.dailytarheel.com and do a search for "horace williams airport".

I used to live right across the street from the airport. It's really pretty small, and I don't remember the concrete being in very good shape either, unfortunately.

When the news announcement came out that it was going to close, I had an ace spy check it out. It's a single, relatively narrow runway with no parallel taxiways or crossovers and no significantly sized aprons. I don't think it would make a great site from what my ace spy told me. If somebody that is familiar with that site knows differently, let me know.

But thanks for the thought. Keep your eyes open!
