Just looked at the results again and, had Adam decided to compete in SS, he would have been the highest finishing Vette in 5th place. Only Salerno ,Braun, Stewart and Thomason had a faster time. However he is VERY happy with his result being the fastest stock car in SM2 and ending up 4th in the season points race.

Check out some of these pictures from the ProFinale. I still can't believe the size of those wings people are putting on SM and SM2 cars now. There is a picture of Adam's car in there sandwiched between all the big winged SM2 cars as well. Also one of Donnie in the spyder.

Does that yellow #99 Elise in the first link belong to Randy Chase in Prepared? Wow. This is just a foreshadowing of what *SP will become in the coming couple of years with the current ruleset. The development will be interesting to watch for sure. And considering that the guy in the STS Nissan 240 experimented with wing only means that somebody's going to nut up for wind tunnel time.

I can't look at the pics right now (site down?), but Randy's Elise is *not* the one with the goofy wing. Also note that is Prepared, not Street Prepared. You can only do spoilers in SP, not wings. So while people *are* doing spoilers and saying they have an effect, the rule still doesn't allow for anything incredibly dramatic (10" high, can't have any air going under it or it is a "wing" which isn't allowed, must be at the rear-most portion of the trunk lid).

As for nutting up for wind tunnel time, I *seriously* doubt it. The folks in SM* and *P and even ST* that are doing wings are simply using existing formulas to calculate what the wing is doing for them and then testing it with and without to see how it feels. Going the extra mile to do wind tunnel testing is *really* expensive (like would still cost some large-ish fraction of what they have invested in the car). There are still likely better ways to spend that same money to go faster...

Me, I've got some air pressure sensors on order I plan to tie into the data acquisition system to find a better place to get air for the intake (along with temperature sensors, but the places I'm looking if I have high pressure there I'm pretty certain it'll be cool air). A spoiler may actually be a part of that to help create that pressure. ;)

I know it isn't P car but hasn't the Bowland car spent time in the tunnel? I thought I heard that not too long ago.

If it has, it's probably only because they were able to slip it in when they had time to spare on an Indy session or something. I *seriously* doubt they paid full price for tunnel time, anyway.

Geoff Zimmer got a few drives in the Bowland AM car and mentioned to me that the tunnel time was part of a grad student research project or similar. Either highly discounted or free. The stickers on his wings say "UIUC" or the like, right? Been a while since I've seen it in person.

There is quite a variety in that top group. Darrin must be giving that miata all she's got. Best of luck to Eric tomorrow.

Dietz was very fast today in his Solstice. I think his West Course time was faster than everyone in A Stock, except Cashmore....and faster than B Stock, not too shabby for a C Stock car. While the course may be cleaner it was a lot colder today. According to multiple accounts Darrin Disimo had a fabulous national championship type of run, unfortunately he was in the wrong car :-) My second run was a solid B+ run. I drove a bit tentative after almost spinning the car a few times on the Sunday practice course.

There was actually quite a bit of grip today, more than I thought, and I just underdrove the car in a few key spots. Fortunately, the car is handling well. 8th place with four Solstices in front of me is not too bad. Tomorrow's course has some very fast offset sections, so there is a chance to make up some time and maybe move up a few spots, but I've got a lot of hard work to do. Hopefully, running all those Tarheel events at Laurinburg with all the transitions will pay some dividends. I'm looking forward to driving the course.

They've done a great job with the courses...fun and challenging. Overall, I'm impressed with the changes that have been made with the transition from Forbes to HPT.

Andy Hollis posted some comments about the setup of the STS car that was DQed involving different tires and wheel sizes (not that this affects you) on SCCAforums, but that car was absolutely set up for push and was red hot as it compensated as the run came on. I'm not sure about your technique about messing around with setup between runs, but that effort proved to be pretty fast. As if you need something else to futz your brain around.

Congrats go out to Adam Breakey for his 14th place trophy (that's a HUGE SS class), and Eric Peterson for his 8th place showing in CS where the Solstice has shown to be the new dog in town.

Of course, it didn't hurt that a bunch of 99 Sport drivers jumped ship to drive the ugly huge honking Pontiac pig, but that's another thread, and now I owe both the club prez and David "I told you so" Spratte a beer.

I'll be interested to hear Adam's thoughts on SS at nationals, especially since it was such a wicked fast class and he co-drove with one of the best autocrossers of all time (Gary Thommason) in his GT3.

I had a much better drive on Day #2, but did not move up in the standings. After thinking about it...I just way underdrove the car on Day #1. I got a bit spooked after almost spinning the car a few times on Sunday's practice course and thus turned it down a notch - that turned out to be a mistake. Anyway, I drove really hard on Day #2 and was happy with my effort. I had a major mistake on each of my first two runs, which I feel easily cost me putting down the 3rd fastest time of the day and maybe even the second quickest. As it was, I was right in the mix and my times would have put me well into the trophies in AS and BS, so I can't complain too much. With such a fast class you have to drive the wheels off the car each day and hope that the runs are clean and free of any major goof ups.

A quick note about tire cooling....even though it was about 60 degrees with a lot of wind on Day #2, our tires overheated by 3rd runs. I had a feeling that I should spray them down, even though it was cool and windy, but failed to do so. Most everyone else slowed down on their 3rd runs as well, likely due to the same thing. It's almost impossible to get the tires too cool before a run on Hoosiers and Kumhos.

The Solstice is a really great car. I think, even if I had the two best drives of my life...while I could have got reasonably close there is no way I could have won the class. Someone like Tim Aro could have made up the difference, but he still would have had to be on his "A" Game.

I had a good chance to win the Pro Finale, as I was close to the leaders going into Sunday morning, but just drove poorly that day. Ironically, the best thing I've done all year was turn early and get setup well for all the key features...and that just did not happen on Sunday....I guess that's why I have a regular job and don't race cars for a living :-) Anyway, I did hang on to 4th place in the season points championship, so that was OK.

New Nationals Site at Heartland Park

Overall, I'm very pleased with the new site. While the off line grit was a pain at the Pro, it was much less of an issue as the week went on. Overall, the grip was good and it will just take everyone a while to recalibrate from concrete to asphalt. Ultimately, I think this change will help make the sport more affordable as folks don't have to drive all over the country trying to find good concrete to run on to prepare for Nationals. Plus, tire wear is much better on asphalt. Ironically, the surface at Sanford is close to the grip at HPT and thus makes for good practice for anyone wanting to get ready for a trip to Nationals. Danville is also close, but is not as gritty.

It was nice to have a large covered rest room facility/tech/impound area located right next to the coruse and grid. The site is also much more camping friendly than Forbes Field. Though, Donnie stayed on site and said the noise from the mid-week dirt track race was annoying. For those needing gargae space for working on your car or for vendors sales, they have bays for rent. While it's not perfect, it's a pretty decent setup that we are lucky to have access to.
