I'm a big fan of everything that went down at this auto-x.

It was perfect*. Grid was a little tight, but that could be fixed pretty easily. But really, if the only issue was that grid was a little cozy? I'll take it. The fact that we were out of there that early with fun runs and a game of tag with the timer head. . . 'nuff said.

The course itself was some of the most fun I've had driving a car this year. Fast, flowing and I actually liked the finish. It's good to reward some restraint after all that flat-footed goodness. And that finish did exactly that, if you gave up the speed at the right place the finish was real fast.

First run was pretty awful but woke me up after the four hour drive on three hours of sleep. Second one felt good. Real good. Third had a novice in the car who DNFed both runs in the morning. I'm going to start talking myself through the course more often. :P

Again, thanks to the B' Boys and all the usual suspects who made it happen. Can't wait for L'burg!

*Of course there's the issue I have with Kevin Allen's final run. I mean, why do you need 5 runs? I was practicing for nationals. You only get three there, right? Right?

Oh yeah. Looking ahead was key.

But like Richard pointed out if you didn't get those key points to look at you were hosed.

My ridealong was having issues with the gate after the second pivot. He kept missing it because he was looking at the pivot. And then tracking out too tight to it to make the gate.

I told him when I was looking at the gate on my runs—usually a bit between the last two left pointed cones before it. He went out and put two clean ones together and got his first Novice trophy. Congrats Pete!

The secret to getting FTPAX is using a car with from the factory alignment on factory shocks and sweating out Popov vodka after a four hour drive from the beach where you wake up at 4 am.

That sounds like the Mike Landreth approach to Solo events. The more hung over he was the faster he drove.

Nope we tried that formula as well (except for the hangover) and it didn't work quite as well for us. Got there late and only did one quick walk thru besides the one with the novice group. I pointed out the tow outside gate cones and told them DON'T slallom those two cones!!! Off to Topeka in two more days.

The hangover is the key, Chuck. Just ask Aaron. :drunkin:

Good luck at Nationals!

That's the kind of thing that keeps you coming back. You almost believe that the tidal wave isn't just over the horizon :)

I led Jim P after the morning runs too. Heck, I led all of SP. But I took Rodney Wright's advice to "add some time" in the afternoon runs and ended up way behind. I gotta get a new driving coach.

Course was fun. I liked the fast transition from right to left heading up the hill past start/finish. I liked the entire uphill section. Reminded me of a fast Rocky Mt course, without the trees.

If you made Popov Creeper, you would be unstoppable. Ask Dan and Aaron about that.

How'd that timer head fare? I would have liked to do a post-mortem but had to leave pre-cleanup...

Most punted heads in the past have escaped with only mechanical and wiring damage -- the electronics are pretty stout.

During the coursewalks I was semi-joking with Dustin that we need a little magnetic sign to attach to the laser heads that says "$400". Not that it would change anyone's driving behavior through the gates, but at least no one would have sticker shock if someone destroys it.

It worked, but bent the 1/8" steel 90* bracket and had alignment issues now that the up/down screw was on a bias. Nice marks on the laser housing. Interestingly enough, I decided to test the laser by shining it into my eye instead of onto my hand because I'm smart like that. Should I start taking piano lessons now so I can sing the blues?

Thanks everyone for the positive comments. I agree, the course was a lot of fun to drive. I knew that with a slalom filled course there would be a few more than average cone calls, but I think it went smoothly. Also, that one spot where DNFs occured was not intended to be a gotcha point... but in hindsight I can see why some people wanted to slalom there.

I agree also about the grid being tight and a bit confusing at first. But that is something we can fix at the next event.

I am glad everyone had fun. Now it is time for Topeka!
