THSCC results of the Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia are here. (At least the best I could gather. If I’ve missed anyone, mark it up to, “I’m OLD AND TIRED after 2 days in the heat. Just post what you did if you’d like.) To place in the games you had to run both days. Todd Breakey was 1st today in STS2, and Les Davis was 1st on Saturday in SM2 , but weren’t eligible for an overall metal because of the 2 day requirement. In the games, Adam Breakey took 1st in SS, Keith Vail was 1st in ES, Donnie Jones came 1st in STX. Jim Pastorious took 2nd in FS after a heated battle with Karen Kraus. A beautiful 280 degree spin in his final, blisteringly fast run did him in. Rick Butters came in a close 2nd in AS after ending the day yesterday in 1st. Wes Eargle placed 3rd in CSP after ending Saturday in 2nd. Dave McKenzie also finished 3rd in STU. Bernie Baake finished 3rd in HS and Stephen Westerfield finished 4th in SM, less than a second out of 2nd place. Gwen Baake finished 2nd to Ginette Jordan on Saturday, .666 seconds off the pace, but managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on Sunday in a cone fest that place her out of the metals. Judi Westerfield played on Sunday only and said to tell all that she had a good time.

For complete results go to www.brr-scca.org. (We were told to not use the “www.” part of the address-some hitch in their website.)

I just tried the link and it seems to work OK.

FWIW, I was behind Jeff Joyce by a second and a half or so on Saturday, and led the #3 competitor by 0.058 seconds. That guy was pitted across from Stephen and myself Sunday AM and had the car on jackstands, changing the springs. He wound up whooping on Jeff by 1.2 seconds, and I was within four tenths of Jeff. It was a fun battle with Jeff Sunday, but that smackdown came from out of nowhere. Damn Hondas.

And Anthony Hodges set up a great course. Instead of the traditional "U" course they did a "T" with both start and finish next to the crossover. (Saturday: Start, hard right then left into a diagonal three cone slalom, offset, OPEN Walter Houston box, offset, wide turnaround, nine cone 24 pace slalom with some cones on the centerline, some cheating the easy way, some the hard, offset with a harsh chassis unsettling unless you were done turning by the time you reached the cone, back left then right into two 90* boxed cones defining the turnaround (where we usually grid) quick juke left-right-left finish.

Sunday's course was almost Saturday's course run backwards, but they fixed the middle offset the hard way cones in a 9 cone slalom and made it stupid fast.

Were there really only 9 cones in that slalom? It seemed like 90. Longest I've ever seen. Walter, even you would have approved of the chicago box. I t was enormous. You could have driven school bus through it with no problems.

I think the Saturday course had 12 cones in the "never-ending" slalom and Sunday's had eleven (counting entry and exit cones).

Sunday's fourth run....brake early for the first run around, accelerate out and up through the offsets (I swear the car caught air on the bump) hard into the never-ending slalom. Getting a little behind about cone 6, lift a little on the throttle and car knows exactly what to do. Hard on the throttle on cone 10 of the slalom, eixt through the offsets. Dang, I am moving. The shift light comes on well before braking. Great entrance into the turn around at the very, very top of the runway. Perfect exit...I can't be running this well. I had to hit a cone in the slalom....I look over to see if any course workers are moving ...none are moving...yippeee.... Oh shit, I missed the outside wall and am now driving to the cone I am suppose to late apex. In a split second me and the car are looking directly over at the slalom and a lot of tire smoke.

Lesson for today....never, never look to see if you hit cones :-)

Jim, did I mention that I beat you (raw) for the first time ever this weekend? By 0.254 seconds? You need to stick with track; even a girl beat you in class. :P

That I made your weekend :) I don't feel bad getting trounced (it was more than a beating) by Karen. We even got a few photos of her "You just got beat by a girl" sticker.

Jim, consider yourself lucky that Karen didn't slap one of those stickers on the purple beast.
