So, I am going to keep my STi AS legal, which for while I own a 2004 means 17x7.5 wheels. What's the hot ticket for street tires if I were to want to run STU instead? Just talking about using them for racing here, not street driving.

What would be the hot ticket if I were to buy some STU-only wheels? (I probably wouldn't as I'd want to have my STU tires available as rains for the times I was running AS, but I'm curious.)

I would say full tread the RT-615 Azenis, but shaved the Yokohama Avan Neova is better from what I have heard.

FWIW, I ran the Hankook RS-2s this weekend and really really liked them. I have nothing to really compare them to though. They are a little cheaper than the RT-615 and maybe a tad more rain-friendly. Just my .02 as a NOV....

Just to give an opinion from someone who has run the 'kooks. They are decent but like lots of camber and wide wheels to work best. Maybe Aaron Buckley will pipe in since he also ran the Hankooks for a couple events on the Celica.

I will let Marcus answer that as I don't necessarily care about being on the bleeding edge right now. The Bridgestone RE01Rs are supposed to be 'the' tire right now, and if you don't mind shifting to 3rd a lot, the 235/40/17s are niiiice. RE070s are nice, and are on the pace, but I think that as the car gets to the limit, the 245/235s are nicer. Regardless, locally, any of those will do it.

Otherwise, the RT615s are always on the pace, and K.A. is swearing by the Avons he is running. All other 'popular' ST tires apply here.

I think the last I looked, running a 17x9 CP05s(?).. but that is for the 'money conscious'.

Just my two cents.

I don't like the kook's. Some do. They are not nearly as predictable as the azeni. Like Keith said, they might do well wide and with a short side wall.

I have no clue as to how the advan's or the new bridgestones perform. Isn't Yoko offering contingency money? If bridgestone made the RE01R compound similar to the RE070, that would be my pick. The RE070's performance is totally independent of temp and predictable. A 245 RE07 would be the perfect tire.

Interesting. My impression of the RE070 at Laurinburg was that it overheated and got greasy. Is that just at TnT thing where you get to run too quickly? That was at the TnT we did where we only had like six drivers, so you could pretty much just drive from the exit of the P around to the runway and then take off again.

Donnie, have you looked at the Advan Neovas? I have heard that those are the shizzle if the make a size for your car.

I guess I should have clarified my size in my previous post. I am running a 225/45R17.

Well, outside the scope of the 'latest and greatest', a lot of the problems with the RT215s have been fixed in the RT615s, and I no longer fiddle with pressures. I just run a staggered pressure (F/R), and leave it all day. With a car that isn't pushy, I can do all of my autoX runs without them going off. With a stock car, managing the front tires is the thing to do. WIth the RE070s, if you push them too hard with an understeering car, they will get greasy, IMHO. However, people who have neutral --> loose cars (STi AWD loose) haven't complained nearly as much, and that is from two driver cars.

YMMV, but the 'tire' isnt necessarily that much better, IMHO, it is just what 'color' you like best. Choose one.

Donnie, although I don't have the power or skill that you have, I haven't had any problems with the RE070's yet. The TNT may have been what you said, to many runs back to back getting them heated up too quick and too much. At the first event in Laurinburg after the TNT, I had issues getting grip cuz they never got warm enough till near the end of each run. This weekend was different as they warmed up nicely and held me down (except for my first run  ). If you haven't given them a try except for the TNT, do so at the next event. Even though I may not like having you next to me in STU

If I recall correctly, the 245/40 01r is the same prices as the 225/45 070.
