How did you move up to the top 3?

Subtract a second for tires with grip (instead of the slippery tires I was using).

(38.997 - 1 sec (for grippy tires) ) * 0.818 (DSP pax) = 31.082, or 3rd place.

Actually, 0.515 sec off my raw time would've done it for me - which I have no problem blaming on the tires based on their level of grip Friday night. (that's right, when I'm slow, it's never my fault!)

And Peter actually brought his nice, fresh Azeni with him, in case we needed to use them - but I was too lazy to swap.

:D

blah blah blah... :cryin: Was there anybody at the event that wasn't on old busted tires??? Heck, my fronts were showing cords before the event started (note to safety marshalls: Carl Fisher said it was OK! :D). And the rears were somebody else's old busted tires that were never that great in the first place for auto-x... Factor in the cold and I think us old busted R compound guys did pretty well.

I drove Jim P's car for a couple of fun runs Friday night and I must say, old busted Hoosiers on a cold night have less grip than most street tires I've ever driven. For my first time on Hoosiers, it sure surprised the heck out of me.

Kevin, if you want to try a car with real traction issues (on top of old busted tires), give mine a shot sometime. Heck, I'd even go to this weekend's VMSC event just so you can co-drive my car to see how you handle it. Just say the word...

The other Jim

- or maybe I just haven't been paying attention :stupid:

Didn't think I was talking smack. Just trying to support Jim P's argument about the TIR controversy - 2 out of 3 weren't on Azeni vs. 2 out of 3 would've been on Azeni (if mine hadn't been busted).

The comment about me winning Open class with STS pax was true, btw - even on my busted tires. :P

As far as driving your car at VMSC - I drove Mike's BMW and went 1.5 seconds slower than my best time in my car. I've never autoxed a rwd car before (or even driven one on a regular basis in about 15 years), so the adjustment from awd to me is enormous. I was getting the back end loose in a lot of places, and driving very timidly in most others. I'm sure that if I drove the car every day and autoxed it every time, I'd be about as fast as I am in my Subaru.

Sorry if I ruffled anybody elses feathers...

edit - wanted to add that if i had the money right now, I'd have me one of them BMW's. Much more challenging to drive fast than the Subaru, which would add another level of fun to autox. :D

Like I said, blah blah blah...

The only things we can be sure about in this world are death, taxes and old busted race tires. Er, or something like that.

I tried to convince myself that I had old busted tires since they were three year old a little over half worn OEM GY's that had run a track event in 2001 and a bunch of autocross runs, mostly in cold weather. Les's car had brand new almost half worn OEM GY's (same exact tire model and size). I decided that this potential excuse didn't fly . . . especially on a cold night :D :D :D :D

Dick and all,

Magnaflow folks really know what they are doing with exhausts. I have not officially dynoed the car, but according to the G-tech, I picked up 25 hp from the exhaust pieces. 9 hp from the cat-back and 16 from the X-pipe. I didn't run the car bone stock, but magazines got mostly between 14.0-14.2 bone stock. The first time I ran the car, I just had the cat-back and ran a 13.97@98mph, after installing the x-pipe I ran again and ran a 13.61@102mph. Those numbers seem to back up the g-tech horsepower gains.

As for technique friday night, I shifted into second in the first little straight, and never saw first again. I did this on all 14 runs. I didn't really see a need for shifting into first since I could pretty much make the wheels spin at any given moment I wanted in second (torque is cool  ). After riding with you Dick, I can say that you did the turn arounds and tight turns better than I ever did, my driving style was a bit more aggressive elsewhere on the course, be it good or bad thing, watching Mike (kicking my ass in my own car), he didn't seem aggressive at all, at least much less so than me, so maybe that was a bad thing.

The small lead I had on you could probably be attributed to the 25 extra hp, and maybe if your tires are three years old they have hardened a bit? Also, I have autoxed a heck of alot this year and most of it on the RBC center surface, so I'm very used to it. I'm sure with a bit more practice in that car, you would be whipping me good. :D

Speaking of butt whipping, I have to thank Mike for clearing up any doubt in my mind of my relative decreased driving ability. For those of you have haven't been in the club all that long, and even those that have, have probably forgotten. Long, long ago, way back in the 20th century , there was a guy with the last name Davis who regularly and consistently whipped people with the names of Whitney, Johnson, Ecclestone, and Buckley. Not sure what happened to that guy, but it sure as heck wasn't the same guy who was driving my car Sunday, that guy really sucked. Oh well, I can't even prove it anymore since the archive results are no longer accessible, I have to rely on my memory and even that is fading.

-Les

Les,

Wow, thats a lot of power. Did you power shift/speed shift when you ran the 13's? Do you still have the stock Cats?

Just in case I do some more FS driving I'm glad your car is not going to stay legal for Stock.

Looks like we both learned from each other and from Mike. Too bad you applied what you learned and I didn't . . . yet. I should have ridden with you :D

Seat time is absolutely critical. I thought 14 runs in one night would do the job but I suspect I got in a rut after the first few runs. I guess all those highway and city street miles I drove my car this year didn't do my autocrossing any good. Combine that with the fact that the only other autocross I drove this year was in my FF and I guess RUSTY driver is a legit excuse.

Thanks for the info!!!

Les - thanks a lot for letting me drive the 'stang. That car is great! I have this slowly growing lust for some good Amurican iron, and I was amazed how fun it was to drive. Felt like a softer more torquey version of the BMW ;)

Dick,

I don't power shift, not sure what you would call my shifting technique, but I do fully press the clutch, and lift throttle between shifts. Its a pretty quick shift though I'd say about a 1/4 second that is when I don't miss  No, I no longer have the stock cats, replaced the four stock cats with two hi-flow units along with the stock h midpipe.

Mike,

Glad you enjoyed it, I have been very surprised by the car. I like it alot more than I thought I would. Its hard to believe that I have an MR2 turbo collecting dust in my driveway. I've only driven it a couple of times since buying the Mustang. Never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but I highly reccomend trying out some american iron. There is just something "right" about having a V8 driving the rear wheels...
