Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

I would autocross from now on if we had someone counting 1001,1002, 1003 and there was no trophy at the end. That said, while the trophies are unimportant, the accurate timing and scoring allows me to compete and measure myself against others. I am in it to have fun and get better (I'm successful at the former, the latter is hit and miss). but my competitivness makes me want to measure myself against something.

I voted maybe. I need times, I don't need trophies.

For some reason I feel like timed performance seems the "purest" form of measuring personal ability.

Even when I go to the track these days I have gotten a little bored during regular sessions waiting for the adrenaline that comes with the Time Trial :)

Using my experience at Sanford yesterday I can say that regardless of whether there's even a timer recording the times, I can tell that a run either sucked or was pretty fast. Even without the timer, I would've been disappointed in my first 3 runs, and felt the same satisfaction with my last run. The last run was way smoother than the others, I was really pushing the car - especially through the last section before the loop - and when I crossed the line, I didn't feel that I had really screwed anything up that bad through the entire run. Really satisfying to finally "get it."

But... when I looked over at the timer and saw the time, I went from being satisfied to being ecstatic. It's nice to actually have a measurement of how well you did, so you can compare your performance to others'.

So, I would have to have a timer (which I mentioned would hypothetically be present in my original hypothetical post, btw) - at least for some events. But I could do without the trophies, posted results, etc. as long as I had a way of knowing how I compared against my competition - whether it's me or somebody else in particular. On Sunday, my competition was me and Mike Whitney. All other comparisons were incidental.

At the least, I want my times recorded. More often than not, I don't catch what my time was and my main competition is myself. I'd like to see others times so I can relate mine to something...
no trophies, no problem...no pax, never remotely took it seriously...just looked at it out of curiousity..."oh, I'm in the top half this time..."

:)

I need to see the time and to see it in relation to the competition. Especially this year when I have tried to work on being consistant across the runs. The PAX is no importance. I think this is confirmed by the lack of importance of PAX results at the national level.

As for trophies, yea they are important. I still remember my only novice trophy (3rd I think in my third event). And those first THSCC trophies were cool. Then my first national trophy and receiving in front of some of the best competitors was way cool. And the first ProSolo trophy....

Has the excitement of the national stuff worn off, I hope by mid 2004 it does :)

When I go on stage to get a national trophy, I will probably tinkle with excitement.
