Eliminate all PAX classes. Award the top 3 novices a trophy and they are no longer eligible for a novice trophy.

Introduce a PRO class that is a pay to play class. To run PRO you need to ante up an additional $20. That money is divided amount the PRO competitors. Yes, it would be the only class based upon PAX.

Eliminate any awards given for PAX performance. We would still publish the PAX results, only for reference.

Lots of clubs run an "X" or "time only" class. Perhaps killing TIR and/or PRO but then giving people the option to run X could be the trick.

Another potentially good option is allowing Novices to run their entire first season in Novice, including calculating season points in the class. The source of a lot of the mid-pack cars in TIR is people kicked out of Novice.

I do worry that all this discussion and worry is all being forced by people outside of the affected classes. Claiming that open is suffering doesn't necessarily mean that open will automatically become healthy if TIR/PRO went away.

(I'm probably running Azenis in DS open next season, BTW)

A summary: let's change all classes except the one that I'm running in. Is that accurate?

buzzzzz....wrong answer. No way would I ante up money to run in PAX class at our sites. I think I ponied up money a couple of times at NASA-VA PRO's. I did win $7 of it back. I think Scott won it that day.

I will be moving back to open class next year.

I paid for NASA-PRO a few times in 2000-2001. I cherry picked when there was a national tour event (or Pro Solo) and all the regulars were gone. I had a good set of Kumho's on the car and the course put me near the top of 3rd gear at one point, kind of a perfect scenario for the Celica. I won $55 I think. When it got around to tax time I was able to offset my winnings with my expenses... Jim beat my RAW time by about 0.1 seconds.

I liked their Pro class...

Scott

That PRO class was fun. You talk about a class with some of the very best drivers on the East coast showing up. There was one single heat for the PRO drivers. Everyone stuck around to watch it.

Because of that, I mentioned the PRO class.

But, VMSC is running the same thing (PRO for money) and there are no takers.

This is the best idea I've heard on the subject yet.

Frist year-people run novice all year. 1st place at end of year is Tarheel Rookie of the Year. You get people charged up because they have a shot at being competitive because they are (with each other).

How difficult would this be to implement?

Maybe an ITR in DS.
Or half-assed STX prepped 330.

I ran the NASA Pro class a few times with NO chance of winning (slow driver with a tough PAX against some Really fast drivers like GH, Tim Aro, Mark Chiles, Richard West, Eric Peterson, etc. . . . . ). Why? It ran at my preferred time of day and it was easier to get a number that would "work" with the numbers permanently on my Formula Ford. Of course, I had a job then so the extra cost wasn't much of an issue:D
