Just curious... what is considered "THE" hot tire for street tire class this year, especially for heavy 3400 lb cars? Is it still the Azenis RT-615? If I do happen to make it to an event, it will probably be without "R" tires and tire trailers. So, I'm curious. Have any other new tires, especially affordable ones, made it to the scene this year?

Miles,
I can't imagine how it wouldn't be the 615. Having gone through multiple sets of the 215's in daily driving and TIRE class, I think the 615's are a touch grippier and even a little quieter. Then again, my car's around 2600 pounds, so I can't speak on overheating.

If you do purchase, edgeracing.com has the cheapest prices around on Falkens, but Discount Tire Direct will beat their prices by a buck.

The main problem with the 615 is the very limited availability. I am going to give the Sumitomo HTR Z a try. For $69 a tire (255/50/16), hard to go wrong. We will see in a couple of weeks though. I want to scrub them in for the upcoming track events.

Don't worry Martyn, I will put the V710's on in the afternoon :)

For a Heavier higher HP car, I still think that the Azenis are the best choice. Kooks arent bad IFF you can run enough camber, and there are the Kuhmos.... Falken FK451s shaved.... there are quite a few tires. I think it will be mostly an RT-615 spec tire class locally (or Subies running on Bridgestone 225/45/17 RE070s).

They are good until a hot day with a long course where they WILL overheat. Just run your good runs 1st and 2nd run* ;)

By 'limited', do you mean limited size availbility?

That I totally agree with. As far as stock, I have not had problems with that. Hopefully, the 235/40/17s will be coming out soon... ;D

Yes, the size selection is very limited. Even with the promise of future releases, there isn't anything really available.

The widest in 16" will be 225's...that will not get it done. No matter how "sticky" they are.

Has anyone done this? I'm curious how Discount Tire Direct beats Edge Racing's price, since Edge's shipping cost is additional and Discount Tire's shipping is 'free'. If it's based on 'after shipping' price, Discount Tire is already cheaper, at least on the RT-615 sizes I looked at.

He might be talking about the local store, not the online vendor.

I've had a set of the HTR-Zs on the GTO since the fall. I'm still liking them and the price was unbeatable. Of course I'm comparing them to the "craptacular" BFG KDWS's that come on the car from the factory. Performance of the HTRZ is far superior in every regard, except perhaps snow traction. Although driving over ice patches on the Blue Ridge Parkway this christmas it didn't do too bad.

True, it could be a typo in the name. (Discount Tire Direct is an online store only, the local stores are called Discount Tire.)

Cool. Now I know not to get a false sense of security in the morning when I'm only a few seconds behind you, then. :D

I gather the V710's are worth a good bit over the A3S05's and last longer, too. I love the feel of the Hoosiers (including the "skating" feeling when they're working right that Hoosier warns about), but I am resigned to them not lasting the season. So I might end up switching to V710's at some point, although ancient brand loyalty leaves me inclined to wait to see what Hoosier's 06 tire is like. But I didn't see the V710's in anything but 225/50 that would fit on the 16x8...?

Opportunity to voice opinion on V710 tire size shortcomings.

Actually it's Tires.com. That's Discount online distribution operation. I got my 615's a few weeks ago and Edgeracing.com was $20 per tire cheaper than Tires.com.
