In regard to shift light in helmet? Nope. Too much trouble since I also shift by the sound of either the engine or the rev limiter (which is an engine sound).

I don't understand the comment about not being able to hear when to shift in a race car. Seems like the major noise in a race car is engine noise . . . at least at autocross speeds. It might be tough to hear the engine in a relatively quiet street car such as in Miles' Corvette (which is why I researched whether it had a rev limiter and/or was likely to hurt the engine by over reving).

In track racing using the tach/shift light is much more important simply because at higher speeds shifting at the optimum revs is much more important than it is in autocrossing. Conversely in autocrossing things happen so fast that the tradeoffs tend to favor paying maximum attention to the course even at the expense of less than optimal gear selection.

Clearly Dick needs one because he is lacking in the talent department.

i think what he was saying was the noise inside a car and the other cars around you could be too loud to listen for exhaust pitch as a gauge of when to shift. or he could have just been trying to be nice instead of telling me i was not using a very reliable que for shifting.
