I'm signed up to be at the novice school in march, and hopefully going to do the 1st points event. Currently I've got Dunlop SP Sport 8000's on the car. The fronts are fine, however the rear's are down to the wear bars, but still have measurable tread. Should I go ahead and replace the rears before the event(s) or wait? I'm gonna have to replace them in May anyways, before my NC inspection roll's around.

Thanks for the advice.

-Johnathan

the rears should be fine for an autocross weekend so long as it doesn't rain really hard when you are driving to and from the event.

Johnathan, there is an on going tire discussion on the Track forum at this time. take a peak at it, you might find it useful. also, visit Hubcap Heaven as they are a club sponsor and always willing to help. good luck and welcome. steve

The only tire rule in AX is as long as they were a (AX) legal tire when new is there cannot be cord showing, otherwise you can run them even if completely bald. Hoosiers are usually down to the wear bars after 1 event.
Even if you buy new tires, use the worn ones for the school.

In autocross, having a lot of tread on your tires is actually bad. Just for fun last fall I ran our non-points autocross in my Neon on brand new street tires (Dunlop Sport A2s, I believe). Absolutely tore the crap out of them, probably lost 3/4 of their life that one day. The taller the tread blocks are, the more they get flexed. That makes them hot, and they get soft and tear away...

So as Chuck said, use your worn tires for the school.

Sounds good, even better now that I realize I need a new Fuel Pump for the car, which ain't cheep.

You think they would be fine for the school and the event the next day, assuming they just hit the wear bars recently?
