Need some help from the BMW crowd. I want to order some KMac camber plates and a Conforti CAI. I see that Turner motor sports has them for sale, but wanted to ask if you knew of a cheaper place to order the parts?

I'm also looking for some SS brake lines. Anyone know of a good source for good quality, decent priced lines?

thanks

Turner's a good place to buy from. You might check w/ Adam to see if he can get what you need at a better price (he probably can).

Re the camber plates - I have been hearing a lot of good info about Motor Force plates for the E36. If nothing else, the information on that site is a must-read for anyone prepping a BMW. Those are probably what I will go with when I do the suspension on the M3.

Not sure if you'll think the price is decent. But I just installed Stoptech SS Lines and the fit and finish is excellent. So is the quality. I ordered them directly from Stoptech.

I thought about going with the motor-force plates, they gotten some good press on the forums, but after some conversations, I've steered away from those because they are metal on metal, where the KMac are steel with poly inserts. I understand all metal transfers a lot of vibration back into the car where the poly will limit it to a degree. Since mine is primarily a daily driver, I'm going to have to compromise on the parts to live in both worlds. I'm still interested in what you have to say and if you are going with the motor force plates.

the previous owner of my car installed the UUC SS brake lines and they look really nice. oh and they work.. so thats a plus. :P

i'm really trying to justify buying a CAI, but from what i gather there isnt much to be gained powerwise over the stock box unless you go w/ the euro HFM. and even then the gains are pretty minimal. just an FYI i guess before you drop $350 on an intake. they do sound cool though. i took out the inner sound baffle on my stock box and it definatly made it sound more growly. even my gf noticed w/o me mentioning it.

Not sure how it applies to the E36, but I know on the E39 the K-mac plates increase the ride height, by about 3/8" FWIW. E39 K-mac plates are also known for very poor manufacturing quality control. I ended up using Ground Control plates -- they increased the ride height by just a bit over 1/8" compared to stock E39 M5 plates even though GC claimed they had a lower profile than stock. From examining the stock M5 top mount, it is extremely low profile such that it wouldn't be possible to make an adjustable one that is thinner imo.

My 325is did not sound any different when I installed the CAI. It sounded a whole lot better once I put in the Turner ECU chip. May not be the same for the M3.

Are yours Fubar? If not then just leave 'em alone IMHO. You arent tracking the car and the stock ones are doing fine correct?

I think it falls into the same category as the CAI....

All IMHO :P

Rodney, mod, mod, mod, i always say. Ryan probably has a point regarding the SS brake lines but that is a decision you will need to make.

however, more air in more air out means more horsepower. at the least a catback (go to R&J, don't buy one of those online) and then a chip as Mitch suggested, added to the Conforti CAI and you will be hooked up.

unfortunately, that is where i am with my 328 and i am mostly maxed out HP wise. so next i start tearing out the interior to drop weight. "i's gots the jones you see"

mine is getting further from streetable all the time so no help w/camber plates. good luck. steve

or get '96+ M3 strut hats and swap the left and rights. thats good for around -3 a side and is my plan. but of course there's no adjustability that way. i'm gonna terrorize the streets of cary w/ my radical track alignment

You know, you have to mod your car to "make" it yours. I spoken to Dave Davis and he recommends both the CAI and SS lines. I have to assume you can make more HP from the change. I've considered "fogging" the air box. Any one done that? Personally I like a little growl when you hit the gas.

Also looking to shark the 328 for a little more umphhh.

As for the SS lines, he states the feel of the brakes is improved since you don't get the ballooning effect under hard braking. I also figure after 10 years of age and 50k of abusive miles I've put on the car, it's time for some modest upgrades.

So what the hell does this all mean? These are mods I wanted to do to the car since I've owned it and I'm going for it. Since I'm moving to STS, now I can do what I've wanted to do, but I want to make the correct choice for parts.

Let's get back to camber plates. Actually how much vibration would or is transmitted back into the car? I have heard some negitive press on the K-Mac plates. Anybody have any more comments on solid camber plates? It seems from what I've read, you can only get about 2.5 degrees of neg camber from the K-Mac where you can get a little more than 3 from the motor force plates.

Ohhh, where to spend my money.

what size is your HFM? (why do bimmer guys call this a HFM when everyone else in the world calls it a MAF?)

cosmos makes a good nicely priced CAI and the new version is all silicone and very lightweight. i think tis like $130 as opposed to $350ish for the rest. an idea i guess. it works w/ 3" and 3.5" (euro/540) HFMs.

if youre bored, take the the lower baffle out of your air box and the little snorkel that goes to the kidney grill. its quick and easy and reversable and gives it a little more growl. just dont take out the upper baffle that goes to teh HFM because the smooths the airflow over teh HFM.

anyone have a short shifter kit on their bmw? i'd like to give some a feel ;) My plan for now is to rebuild the stock shift linkage and maybe use UUC's DSSR to see how nice the stock shifter can be.

exhaust? from what i gather again, there are minimal power gains, but it'll sound nice and save like 25lbs.

Dan, thanks for heads up on the CAI. I'll take a look at it. You mentioned a cat back. I bought one from Dave Davis. It's the Ireland Engineering cat. Full polished stainless from end to end. Looks and sounds good and it is lighter than the stock M3 exhaust I was running. I know Mitch Moore is running one as well. Don't know if you'll be at tomorrows meeting, but I'll have the car if you want to take to look.

I know Dave also has access to a decently priced short shifter that you may want to ask about. That's low on my list of toys, but talk with Dave and ask. I think his runs around $150. I know Dave is out sick this week, so touch base with him next week.

Thanks
