With cars 1995 not needing to pass emissions inspection starting next year, it got me to wondering if I could remove the cat from the Miata and still be legal in STS2. I can't find anything in the 2005 rule book about catalytic converters. I know that people say "if it doesn't say you can, then you can't" but I want a real world answer. Were there any protests concerning this in the SCCA this year?

Can you remove them in the ST* categories?? And if not, can I get it gutted?

Just becuase you will not need to pass emissions, does not mean you can remove the cat from the car. The car still has to have its funuctional emissions equipment, so if you remove the cat, the car will not pass the visual inspection.

What David said and no you can't remove the cat and still be legal to run in STS2. If I remember correctly in STS which is the basis for STS2 rules you need to keep the OE cat and it can't be moved more than 6 or 12 (not sure on distance) from its original location when a header and exhaust is installed.

Thanks Keith. That's not the answer I wanted, but if you wanna play you gotta play by the rules...right?

I didn't realize that about the visual inspection David. Thanks for the info.

Todd,

There was a long thread, as I recall, on SCCA Forums after Nationals this year about an "ST" car being DQ'd because the cat was moved too far from the stock location due to repositioning as a result of a header installation. You might want to check out the details. I think it was a Honda Civic.
