The registar might not like the couple of complaints that come across about names not being on the list. But eliminating online payment will increase their work load by at least 25% every event. Hmmmmm.

I liked the fact I could pay Wednesday night before an event and avoid the dreaded registration line.

If you follow through and eliminate online payment, I would suggest moving registration out of the bus and under the awning. The bus has a single entry and exit point that leads to serious congestion and flow problems.

Jim said "awning" !!!!

Doesn't he get to pay twice at every event now?

(Damn: I think I've just said "awning" too.)

Let me back off my statement from last night.

The use of Pay Pal is under assesment for 2006. It may change slightly or be done away with.

This has been a good conversation, keep the pros and cons coming.

Good point Jim. I too would miss Paypal. I hate waiting in lines. I did somehow miss out on one of the events this year due to paying in advance and then getting a free pass due to working as an instructor. I never got credit for that, but honestly not that big a deal. It was worth it to me to not have to wait in a line all year.

except for the fees, it seems like most of the cons are due to pre-registration in general, not particular to PayPal. I'm sure keeping up with refunds, no shows, etc. isn't too fun. I remember to lines prior to PayPal, and they weren't too fun either.

I guess we have to decide wich is worse, the hassel to register at the bus, or the hassel of pre-registration blues.

I also checked out the PayPal site and they have a free job cart feature that might help us out. It would provide receipts for payment via email and reports for registars to use. just a thought

Oh, and if the annual pass deal was sweetened, I would definitley look at it...it's a simple cost/benefit decision right. I didn't get one this year b/c I know I usually only make 6 events per year, so it just didn't make sence.

Has anyone considered www.motorsportsreg.com as an alternative to paypal? It's what we use for track events. Would it work for autox?

My 2 cents...

* I would miss paypal. It is a perk/good thing for the membership

* Will many of the problems mentioned above go away if paypal goes away? I paid by check, but didn't show up. Can I apply that to the next event, etc...

* I also just can't predict if I will go to enough events to make the season pass something I feel is right for me. Lowering the price would make it an easier decision, but right now, I don't know what that price would be.

* Overall I still would defer to the officers to decide what is the best thing to do. But if Paypal goes away, I believe everyone needs to hear the horror stories so that the membership realizes that it was them who screwed this up by making things difficult on those running the show.

Thanks for listening. :P

I have no idea whether this would work for the registration folk but here is a brainstorming idea to minimize "line time" at events:

For folks who have preregistered, allow a "drop box" approach to payment at the event.

We would put a check/exact change cash in an envelope, write our name and class on the outside of the envelope, and just drop it in a "box". Then check off our name on the prereg list just like with the PayPal system. Registration folk could then "simply" verify payment at their "convenience" during the day or even "later". The odds of the club being stiffed if verification came "later" are probably no greater than the odds of a rubber check.

or crack the whip. if you paid you paid. thanks. no refunds after a certain time. no carryover. sorry its time to grow up kids.

is $135 more or less than this years charge for a season pass?

another idea. add $1 to paypal registration. is standing in line worth a $1 (one!!!!) savings? if Jim is correct in his estimate 50 to 70 entrants @ $1 should be enough to cover the admin costs of paypal.

and i still say get tough on the refunds. it's 20 bucks.

This was my VERY favorite part about getting a bus and no longer doing registration under a tent. I could only have one person, two tops, at my table at a time.

As a PayPal user I support Steve's ideas of a PayPal surcharge and/or no refunds. To me not having to spend time in line is worth a buck or two extra for the convenience/priviledge IF PayPal would work for the registrars under these conditions.

I never expected a refund from an event I prepaid via Paypal for. I viewed as buying tickets in advance. Great benefit if you go, I'm out twenty if I didn't make it.

If the issue really is the Paypal costs, there's enough tech heads in the crew, does our web host have a secure shopping cart script, security certificate, etc?

I'm a little surprised that we haven't rolled our own before this. Anbody up for a little e-commerce? Would members use their credit and/or debit cards instead of Paypal?

(No cashback. :P )

I have prepaid 3 events via paypal, and I inquired about refunds, but I accpeted the fact that the money is 'gone'. I consider it a donation to the THSCC fund.

As a member who paypal'd for EVERY event this year, IFF I had a choice, I am ALL for paypal. I NEVER carry any money on my person, and anything to NOT have to mob teh bus to NOT stand in line in an already short amount of time to course walk our 80 second courses I am ALWAYS for.

Of course, I once again trust in the THSCC administration to make a wise decision for a good replacement.

I won't shed any tears for Paypal going away. For reasons mentioned above and others.

To follow up w/ Dave's thoughts -- I would be happy to leave a credit card number on file w/ the club, walk up to the event, and check a box to show that I want y'all to charge me for the event.

Then again this opens up just as many potential problems as Paypal in the first place.

Cash/check is definitely the simple option. And simple is good.
