Thanks for letting me play with you guys this weekend. It was a great event (even with my trip to the hospital).

The school was good, I hope the students all felt like they got the input they were looking for. Based on how many students got trophys on Sunday, I think it was a success.

As for Sunday... that course was fun. Nice fast *pucker* sweepers, with a nice slow and patient section. Good job on the design. Of course we could all point out a thing or two we would change, but I think it was a good course and made for some great competition.

Now -- where is the info for the November event. :D

And for those of you who are playing along at home, Adam was 1st in class, FTS, and FTD! Patrice, Adam's got game...stay tuned.

BTW, for those who were scared of a little rain...it didn't rain. We all got 5 runs, fun runs, and were leaving at 4:00. :D

I think this event went great! The course was very tough but was also rewarding once you started figuring it out.

Thanks to everyone who helped pull it off!

that was fun as hell. a great course that really tested your patience is some places (turn arounds and the very end! ARR), but also had some pretty fast places and a fun/scary sweeper. thanks

oh and also the school was quite helpful and a lot of fun. thaks to chuck and carl who instructed me as well as all the other instructors who gave me/us advice.

i did manage to destroy some tires though :/

I have to admit, I was DREADING this weekend as I went to sleep on Friday night. I just knew it was gonna be a complete washout. I even went and ponyed up for some new rain gear. I guess it paid off

I would just like to thank event chairs Rodney and Aaron for all thier work on the event on Sunday. Also big thanks to Aaron (again) and Jim P for their setup help for the school on Saturday. Also big thanks to Bernie and Gwen Bakke for the bus driving duties.

This was one of the best events of the 2005 season IMHO. Great course, decent weather, no major timing/worker/course problems, NO BITCHING! :) and TONS of hot competition. It was fun watching Adam, Les, Aaron, and Mike duke it out.

I also have to tip my hat to an old man, Brad Mackey took me to the woodshed on Sunday. Its the same old story "If I hadnt hit that cone I would have had a 54.7xx and a top 10 raw time  " Alas, they put those damn orange things there for a reason. I still had a blast and am LOVING my new car. Who needs power?

Thanks to all the people I missed and I cant wait for 06!

I don't have a single complaint, criticsm (constructive or otherwise  ) or even suggestion on how things could have been different/better! It IMHO was THE best event in a long time.
Congratulations to everyone involved!!!! 8)
The students I worked with were very receptive to any/all suggestions, and showed a marked improvement throughout the day and carried what they learned into Sun. it was fun and rewarding. IMO the # of students was just right to give plenty of runs to work on the small details that make a lot of difference, and the courses were both challenging and instructive without being boring.

I had a good but slightly jet-lagged time Sunday.:sleep The course was fun and a bit different from the usual Laurinburg course but had the fast and slow elements in it.

Since I did not get back to the US until 12am Saturday, I did not have the opportunity to send out the mentor letter, but I want to call out Chuck and Donna Frank, Kevin Butler, Matt Roush and a few others who took the time (mostly on their own) to grab a novice and help.
Thanks

Question: :?: What is the "appeal" of two first gear corners at a site which does not need them for space reasons? They seem to be a "popular" course element at THSCC events and I'm trying to figure out why this is apparently the case. To me they are just a way to abuse the transmission, limited slip (if any) and the tires (except for sites which really don't give the option).

1st gear?! on Sunday? I never saw first gear in my car after leaving the line.... I guess 400 ft/lb of torque allows you to get it into second and leave it there.

I did do a downshift on the Saturday timed school course at the U-turn however.... that was fun.

I thought the event was the best of the year as well. Everything seemed to go smoothly and everybody I talked to was having a great time.

The course was fun and had a few features that we don't usually see at our sites. It also had a good mixture of slow and fast sections and flowed very well. The finish was a hair tight but if you set yourself up for it well enough, it was actually a blast and not as slow as it first looked.

It was a nice change from the last event where I didn't have to use 3rd gear and got stuck between gears for a majority of the course. I imagine some of the STI guys might feel differently with their extra hp and short gearing but I never got to see any of their runs. Anticipating another super fast course, I got a used '91 Civic Si ecu from ebay which raised my rev-limit ~700 rpms but it turned out I didn't even need it.

I never felt the need for first gear anywhere on the course. Maybe you should try switching to a car with some torque like my CRX. Seriously, even with the tight sections, I never felt like I was that far out of the power band where 1st would have helped. Heck, I was still getting just a *touch* of wheel spin out of the pivot section at the end of the main runway and I think 1st would have just made things worse. :whoknows:

I agree with the other folks. Is it possible that the 'vette was so tire limited that you had to drive first gear speeds just to make it turn? I had clapped out tires on the old Celica and could spin the back tires at will in the tight stuff - and that is in 2nd gear.

In the RX8 I managed a 53.6 second run with a few mistakes my first time ever in one of those cars. I was out of first gear as I exited the Chicago "triangle" and never shifted back. I *could* have, but I didn't feel the need. The RX8 has a reputation for being torquless.

Maybe I should have practiced my 30 year practice of not downshifting to first gear for anything except "full lock" 180's :( Especially since we couldn't get the power down exiting the second tight turn anyway.

I have a torqueless wonder (96 ftlbs) and I only downshifted once, at the entrance to the hard right after the 3 cone slalom. It probably wasnt necessary but, I really should have tried leaving it in 2nd.

Regarding not using all the real estate at L'burg. It was the original intent to use the "P" but someone chimed in with "You guys know there are only 90 odd people registered for this event right". We shortened the course to not strech the workers too thin. If we would have had 120 entrants, the course would have been longer.

On the other hand, I don't disagree that they were tight.

I *may* have even (mis?)heard one of the setup crew commenting that they probably would have opened it up a bit had it not been for the late hour (setup didn't start until after the school on Saturday).

It certainly would have been fun if the 2nd tight turn had been pulled back 15 feet and left 20-25 feet, but the format we had was also fun!

In answer to Jim's thoughts about the STi's, I talked to Steven Rankins and he commented that 3rd wasn't needed. He tried it once, but went too fast :)
