In the Miata, I have heard the side-to-side clunk using a 1" bar, but not a 9/8" bar.

My 1" bar had been on for 4 years, never clunked until I moved it to the stiffer setting. Clunking continued with the 1 1/8" bar until I replaced the damaged mounts.
