All:

Ok, it is near the end of the season. Some people have clinched their Season Points Class. Some people have not and still have a battle on their hands. Knowing that, what is the 'standard' for class hopping at this point in the season? Knowing that I actually CARE about not screwing people up, I guess I am just going to post classes and see who minds if I join them (in my order of preference)::

- PRO (STU)
- TIR
- ESP
- SM

No one is signed up for STU for next event, and I really dont want to run in a class by myself (Marcus is going to be in Canada). I would prefer to keep my STU PAX, but I am not in line for Top Gun, so I guess it is just a matter of who will let me play in their sandbox.

If you have something mean to say or want to start a 10 page thread, please refrain. I am just looking for the 'standard answer' -- nothing more.

Thanks!

If there is a tight battle in a class, where you could affect points this late in the season, I think it would be the "right" thing to do to stay away.

Beyond that hop away!

Just as an FYI, I do not think Randy Melton will be at L'burg, so I think Art has it sewn up.

You would have been 2nd at Sanford in X class....

X class is a "whiners go home" class, and it's also pretty much a done-deal for this season (Congrats to Carl Fisher). All Carl has to do is show up and not drive like a total fool. Most of the other places are locked in as well.

I'd vote for X class. you certainly have the skills!

In my first season with THSCC and my first event in the '00 GTS I managed to interfere with a season points battle. Had I know any differently, I would have run in a different class (though, even 5 years later, it's fun to pick on Whitney about it).

X would be the best fit. I'm not sure we changed the rule, but if you ran TIR you'd need to run with an ESP pax. ESP with race rubber at a place like Laurinburg should be a losing battle, as well as SM. I'm not sure who's playing in the SM arena these days though.

Speaking of which, are we doing more charity betting for this event? - AB

This is my first year in this club and just over two autocrossing, so my opinion may not be as valuable as others who have done this for years.
I run in the class that is appropriate for the mods on my car. When it was an ESP car, I ran ESP. It is a SM car now and that's what I run. Mike W. could have easily lied about the engine swap and not had to run SM. I respect him for that and hope Konis and tires help him next year.
In the opposite vein, I resent someone who changes classes to trophy when they actually fit in another class. While within the rules, I do not think it honorable.
I wish we would have a "Gentleman's Agreement" (no sexism intended!) to run in the highest class appropriate for your car. I think Art was the only person in ESP at Sanford. I respect him for not taking advantage of less experienced people and jumping up to SM.

If you want someone to run against, I would be happy to codrive. I wouldn't say that I would be competition because you are just to fast. I have the STI bug ever since driving Jon's car. No I say just run X class. Running in a class by yourself is boring. I ran STX alone in Sanford only because I wanted to get back into the WRX before the Subaru Challenge otherwise I would have been in the miata.

Brian, I think you should be able to jump to any class you want to. I've heard that it may screw up points battles but I think that is and always will be part of competition.

I really never understood how folks could think that an outsider could ruin a points battle that two or three people are engaging in. Don't all the usual contenders have to step up their game? Think about it, if X,Y & Z are battleing it out all season and "R" (ha ha) comes in and gets second and the points battle comes out in a totally unexpected way, doesn't that mean that Y and Z should have beat the new guy?

I've been in this situation this season when Bret (with the other yellow R)came out to play in DS at Danville. Not once did I worry about him messing up any points battle, even after he told me he'd been autocrossing for 15 years or since I was 11. To me it was just a little bit more friendly competition.

Short answer: do it!

Asking was a gentlemanly thing to do. Especially the way you're running.

I had it easy..my mods two weeks ago pushed me to SM so I went in without thinking. But, I'm not in a position to screw up a points race. :)

Come to SM. Winner (of us two) has to install my new springs :)

I totally agree, hence this post.

I still have the ability to run STU by myself, and if I choose to do so, I will be bumped if I am the only person in the class. So, essentially, I will be bumped into the next highest class for my car which will be ESP (BSP next year).

So, I am giving myself a choice where I will do the 'least' damage. Also, I am sharing that with the rest of the competitors in my club. I think that is about as honorable of a thing that you can do :)

Looking at the standings, it will affect ESP THE LEAST as no one has a chance to catch first, but in PRO, I could totally affect 2nd -- 5th.

I will let the diatribe continue, but if all else fails, I will just run STU, and bump to ESP.

Thanks for your input, gentlemen (and maybe ladies).

Good for you Brian. I definetely agree with your attitude and approach about this. If STU with a bump to ESP does the least amount of harm then that is what I would do too.

Maybe early in the season you play around and jump. But this is the last points event of the year. So I wouldn't want to screw up another classes EOY points either.

At this point, we no longer bump cars. It's less effort for everyone involved to run a single car class than it is to bump them.

Run X class. Besides, even if there *was* the potential to screw up the points in X, I doubt you'll find anyone in X that *really* cares. I know I wouldn't (though I won't be there anyway) and I think many of the X class folks run X class simply to *keep* from screwing up points battles of other folks.

You're ready for it anyway...which plays to the other reason most folks run X, and that's for the competition!
