Tina, keep coming to events and pretty soon you'll realize that this club has plenty of things funnier to laugh at than novices.

Like Eric Peterson!!!

Tina, the most important thing about autocross is to not get in a miserable co-drive situation! This can be a horrific situation and almost ruin one's life, especially when someone else owns the car (e.g., like Donnie Barnes :-) You are then forced to be perpetually miserable, do all the tire changes, and take constant abuse (e.g., the "unauthorized" Eric Peterson website. Note: Lawusit against wife and co-driver is pending). It is much better to be the car owner, then you get to be the one who treats your co-driver like dirt and laugh at them at the same time.

Fortunately, your co-driver is your husband (Richard, who is a great guy). So, by being the wife, you get the best of both worlds. This means you are essentially the car owner, so you can treat him like dirt and make him do all the work if he ever wants to autocross again (please contact Donnie Barnes if you need any pointers :-) Seriously, I've found co-driving with one's spouse is a very cool thing to do and an excellent way to spend time together, unless Donnie Barnes owns you car :-)

Damn, I was trying to stay out of this world record setting thread, too :-) Oh, what the heck, here are a few thoughts on the novice format & programs...

Regardless of whether THSCC stays with the year long Novice Progam or goes back to something like the previous three event deal, both are reasonable approaches. While there are clearly strong & weak points on both sides, regardless, we are likely "splitting hairs" on the subject. The most important component of making novices initial experience with autocross and THSCC a positive one is the quality of contact they have with the club members and Novice Program!

The fact that the club puts forth such a large effort with the Novice Mentor Program to make these folks as comfortable as possible is a huge compliment to THSCC! If the Novice Mentor Program (kudos to Rob & Graham for their efforts) continues to grow, in conjunction with continuing to run quality novice schools, and hopefully making the Chick School an annual event, then THSCC will have one of the best programs (formal & informal) in the country for supporting new members in what can be a very intimidating hobby/sport to get started in. Ultimately, while I have an opinion on the format debate, no need to share it though since all points have already been covered, I'll support whatever the club's officers deem appropriate for next year. I guess that's my 2 cents worth.

Eric

Tina's comment about being too embarrassed to ask for help took me back. I think I had been to about 7-8 events before I asked an experienced driver to ride with me (not including the Novice school I attended, ,where I didn't feel as self-conscious). We've all (well most of us) been there. When you first start autocrossing it is intimidating to see how much faster the experienced drivers are, but we get better (if only a little) with enough seat time. Keep coming to events and don't be afriad to ask for help - it really will help.

I agree with Eric's comment that whether we choose to run a year-long novice program or a 3-5 events and out novice program is probably not a bid deal compared to the club's committment to run Novice schools, offer a mentor program for novices, and generally be open to helping new drivers get comfortable.

Why don't we have more novice schools throughout the year? I had volunteered to put more on during the year. But the offer has never taken root.

These do not have to be big affairs like the first of the year...it takes me a couple of weeks to recover from those :) Maybe something like 20 driver 5 instructors...a cost of $25 for each student. Limit it to people with less than 4 THSCC events.

You want to make novices feel more comfortable...run by class and make all the runs at once. There is no bigger social area than grid. Have novices run with their class.

If we did more schools most of them could be at places like Sanford. Closer, and the lack of grip isn't a big deal for a school. I have no idea about costs and availability, but I gotta think it would be easier to put on if it were closer. Not that I have a problem with the two day format of a school and an event at Laurinburg, but it is a bigger deal to setup and do...

Sanford has just raised their prices. A small school school like Jim suggests would put us in the red big time at that site.

The school one day, event the following day is the easiest logistically and the most cost effective.

Not really sure how a Saturday novice school at Sanford would push the event into the red.

Greenville is another place that could accomidate it. I would rule out Laurinburg and Danville as being too far away.

Hey, it was worth a try.

I think he meant a stand alone school without a following event would put us in the red.

Greenville would be an interesting place to hold a school. There could actually be space for a covered classroom session. I don't know if we have the time/resources to do another Novice school this year, but I don't see why we couldn't work two into the schedule next year, as long as we can get people to EC both of them.

IF we could afford it. Greenville charges even more than Sanford.

While Laurinburg's distance does suck (actually, now that I have a good route, its the same distance to Sanford for me).

Laurinburg is the low price leader, all other sites are 8 to 12 times the expense.

Danville is further than Greenville or Laurenburg? Maybe if you live in Rockingham or S. Pines... :?

Have we ever done more than one novice school per year? Can anyone provide me with the dates of when novice schools we held in the last five years? (I think I have the last three years - 3/22/03, 3/06/04, and 3/19/05)
