STOCK CATEGORY
- Per the SAC, the following vehicles are
proposed to be added to the Appendix A
Stock Category exclusion list effective
1/1/06: Ferrari (NOC), Lamborghini
(NOC), Dodge Viper SRT-10. Comment:
these moves, and the new listing of the '06
Z06 on the exclusion list as below, are
intended to maintain the status quo for
now.
- The following proposed class changes
into FS, recommended by the SAC, are
submitted for member comment:
Audi S4 V8 (04+) from AS to FS
BMW M5 ('00-'03) from AS to FS
Cadillac CTS-V from AS to FS
Chevrolet Camaro SS ('96+) from AS to
FS
Mercedes E55 AMG from AS to FS
Pontiac Firebird WS6 ('96+) from AS to FS
Jaguar S-Type R from BS to FS
Comments: The European sedans are seen
as good conceptual fits with cars already in
FS, and these moves will provide them
with more realistic competition opportunities.
The Camaro SS and Firebird WS6 are
only incrementally faster than the current
benchmark Camaros, but should be a
good match for the new Mustangs
- The following proposed class changes
into CS and DS, recommended by the
SAC, are submitted for member comment:
Mazda Mazdaspeed Miata from BS to
CS. Comment: this car has not proven to
be as fast as was originally expected based
upon its technical parameters.
Audi TT (225hp, dual intercoolers) from
BS to DS. Comment: the TT is fundamentally
similar to the R32 Golf which is
already in DS.
Audi TT 3.2 V6 from BS to DS.
BMW 330 with ZHP, all from BS to DS.
Comment: the goal of this move is to make
the older generation of the model competitive
with newer one (E90 3-Series). The
difference between the 330ZHP (still no
limited slip diff) and the 330Ci is not
expected to be large.
- The following proposed class changes
into GS, recommended by the SAC, are
submitted for member comment:
Mazda Mazdaspeed Protege from DS to GS
Toyota Celica GTS ('00+) from DS to GS
Volkswagen Golf/Jetta/GLI 24V VR6
('02+) from DS to GS
Comment: The GS class has become faster
recently, due largely to the Mini Cooper S.
The Protégé is believed to be a good match
for the Cooper S, but it is not expected that
any of the above cars, which fit the class
profile, would become dominant.
- The following proposed class changes
into HS, recommended by the SAC, are
submitted for member comment:
Acura RSX (Non-'S') from GS to HS
Acura TSX from GS to HS
Honda Civic Si ('02+) from GS to HS
Hyundai Tiburon 6-cyl ('02+) from GS to HS
Pontiac Vibe from GS to HS
Saturn DOHC models from GS to HS
Toyota Matrix (all) from GS to HS
Civic Si ('99-'00) from GS to HS
Mazda 3 (all) from GS to HS
Comment: these are generally newer cars
which fit the HS class profile and are not
expected to dominate.
Ford Probe (all) from GS to HS
Nissan 200SX SE-R ('95+) from GS to HS
Mazda MX-6 (all) from GS to HS
Toyota Celica GT ('94-98) from GS to HS
Toyota Celica ST ('94-98) from GS to HS

Scott Gets his wish - CelcaGTS to GS
This is going to make HS a lot harder... I have always wanted to pick up a 95ish Celica... might be the time. And moving the RSX non S and Civic Si down is really going to put a cars with a hugh power advanted over the rest of the class, too bad the suspension is not up to it.

Methinks the Mini will have some competition with this. It HAS a good suspension and makes good power.

Come on, this SCCA Solo II sock class. You are supposed to buy a new car every two years to stay competitive!

Don't worry Matt, I think the R will be very competitive in DS for a while. One thing to keep an eye on is the new WRX's with 2.5L engines...

You should write to the SEB and propose the creation of an "I Stock"... ;-)

Funny you should mention that as I was thinking that on the way home, they have just made H-Stock a faster class over all, which I better I guess because there will be more cars that are competitve with the mini's... but a lot of olders cars are really left out of this except maybe the 94-98 celica ST which if I remeber correctly won nat. champships in h stock and e stock before the stock class re-org a g stock before the new celica gt's got thier act togther.

Oh, I guess you forgot about ES...my two ES cars to have are 11 and 12 years old :)

At the local level, all this means very, very little. It is 90% driver and 10% car. All it really means to most people on this list is some may have to buy new class numbers :)

Unless you have a car on that list that can trophy in BS it won't beat the Minis anyways so it won't matter! The Minis are just now starting to show their potential since they just received the first batch of Koni DAs late last month. Chiles would have placed first in almost every class except SS, BS, SM and ASP this past weekend at the Ayer Tour!
That proposed reclassing is absolutely a disaster IMHO. The SEB is finally slowly realizing they made a huge mistake, but are playing CYA: instead of moving the two Minis to more realistic classes, let's move everything else willy-nilly even tho we know the cars we are moving still won't be competitive with the Mini!

Chuck or anyone else,

How did the Ayer courses compare to most other "National Style" courses? i.e. were they representative or did they somehow favor the Minis to make their strengths even more of a factor than "normal"?

Also, for those of you who get SportsCar, there is an article in the August issue in which the Heartland Park sites are discussed. "North" course in 2006 will be on a relatively square patch of racetrack quality asphalt. "South" course will be on a southern part of the road race track. Given the constraints of using a track it would appear that the 2006 South course will be MUCH more like an "airport" course (aka, Ayer, L'burg, Sanford, Danville, etc.)

Interesting since I would love to go to Nats in 2006 to help "break in" the new site.

I thought Ayer was a national level course. It had both very tight sections where I'm sure Chiles could keep the Mini wound up, but it also had some horsepower pull sections.

Basically, I think he drove his ass off. I also think the Kumho was a better tire on that site than the Hoosier by more than normal for some reason.

I still think this is more a case of one driver who is very in tune with his car and happens to be worlds better than his competition. Sort of like Telehowski pretty much was in CS (he certainly had his days of beating BS, AS, and once even SS, IIRC).

(My reasons for why that local dude put two seconds on me on day two were simple...I give a half second to the tires, a half second to him having driven a lot of events there, a half second due to him being used to racing an STi and me being used to driving a Miata, and a half second because he just plain outdrove me. Gee, you'd think it wouldn't have taken me three runs of getting hammered to realize that a high horsepower car *can* be short shifted to some degree if necessary rather than riding lots of limiter. He shifted to third three different times on day two and I didn't shift to third at all. Not good.)

All I care about for nationals in 2006 is that we'll FINALLY be able to camp ON SITE, not outside the friggin gate.

Donnie,

Thanks. FYI someone posted videos of his runs at Devens on SCCAForums. Courses looked pretty decent. Too bad they didn't run autocrosses at that site when I was stationed there in 69 - 71 and was just getting started in autocrossing.

Regarding short shifting. I "cheat" with my FF . . . second gear is good for about 66 mph and third goes to 78 mph . . . and the engine is not peaky.

Dick
