As a corollary to this, we need to undertake a "study" of our site surfaces and find out what colors of marking show up best. Yellow and red crayons just don't work that well in laurinburg (not enough contrast). We also found that a large majority of chalk colors don't contrast with gray concrete either.

Anyone know a source for chalk where you can get boxes of ONE color, rather than the standard 64 colors of Crayola?

Back in "the day" we would just use pieces of broken drywall, it was VERY effective (and cheap). Big bold white lines are usually easy to see.

Wow, someone I know recently suggested exactly that.

Rob emailed me this:

Mike,

Take a look at some of these markers. Do you thinks it’s worth purchasing some of them to try out?

Anyone want to find a source for crayons that is in the united states?

Chalk marks quicker and easier than crayons, and drywall actually does work better than chalk, it just isn't waterproof.

I don't have a problem with buying a couple sheets of drywall.

I don't have a problem providing the drywall pieces in my garage nor directing others to new construction in my neighborhood where an almost unlimited supply of drywall off-cuts can be had for nothing.

Exactly, it should be mostly free. I bet Lowe's and Home Depot will give out a damaged piece for free, one that sits on top or bottom of the pallate.

i thought the blue chalk shows up really well.. the red that was used (at least on sunday) looked more of a maroon color and was hard to see.

Half way there, now find the same thing with a downward firing nozzle.

Okay seriously, hopefully some of the long-time autocrossers can chime in here. Why was the move made away from drywall? Was there something impractical about it that led us to look at other options?

A couple of notes from this weekend.

We used the red lumber crayons when we first put down the course on Friday. Those crayons come in 2 colors. Red (maroon) and Yellow. The Red contrasts with the concrete at Laurinburg better. They Yellow would probably work better at Greenville since it is black top. The only reason for using Lumber Crayons over chalk this weekend was the threat of rain. The Crayola chalk will dissapear at the hint of rain.

Since I own one of those rainbow assortments I tried a bunch of different colors out there. White isn't bad at all. All those pastel shades of brown are practically useless. The best contrasting colors for L'burg concrete seem to be the brightest blue crayons. Probably best at Sanford also.

The only negatives I see about drywall are this. We'll get tons of broken leftovers because they are free. They are messy. We'll have drywall dust and crap all over the trailer in no time unless we use some sealed container. Including not opening or refilling it inside the trailer. We would really want to cut those peices into some useable shape for marking.
