Why did we stop using drywall?

Okay seriously, hopefully some of the long-time autocrossers can chime in here. Why was the move made away from drywall? Was there something impractical about it that led us to look at other options?

Using drywall must have been pre-1997. I never remember drywall. I remember painting at the sites where it was allowed, and chalk/crayon for the sites we couldn't paint.

Art... Ron... someone?

Drywall was relatively easy when construction sites did NOT clean up carefully like they tend to these days. :) Chalk is easy to obtain, store, use, etc. I used drywall scraps in California before moving here in 1986. I don't recall what I used here when I did course layouts. (too old to recall :D )

I have a lot of drywall pieces I'm about to get rid of. I'll even cut it into useable size and shapes. A covered 5 gal pail is a good container to keep in in with minimal potential for a mess. The drywall marks with a dense white line unlike chaulk, is reasonably water resistant and will mark on wet pavement. What's not to like about it?

Chuck, do you have room to bring it to the next event? If not, I can stop by your work one afternoon and pick it up.

Not a heck of a lot of extra room in a Miata, I'm pleased when I can find a spot for an extra change of underwear for 2 day events.
I'll check, but I'm pretty sure I don't have a clean 5 gal bucket with a top. I can bundle it up and wrap it in plastic and bring it to the store on a day we're driving the Celi tho.
