With workers out there one to a station and 3 hour stints, I think they should kick someone like that in the ass.

A hats off to Matt McGrain ... one cone over the entire two days. That is special!!!!

Total Cones:: 23!!!

Thanks to Christine who donated water to cone workers stuck out there during the first heat on Saturday.

I thought it was a great course, too. Technical, but a ton of fun. I'm really glad we had 2 days to run it, so we could try all the different ideas we thought of Saturday night!

I think my favorite feature was the "random spaced slalom" on the taxiway. If you were looking ahead it was really clear, but you had to look ahead. I also really liked the fast sweeper onto the crossover- the workers there must've been kept well entertained! :-)

My thanks, too, for all who worked long and hard to make the event a success- including those course workers out there in the sun for the super-long 2nd heat Saturday!

Hey, I rode with Marcus - and he's even more of a hack than Brian. :P

I found out some interesting stuff during ride-alongs... an STi in 3rd gear accelerates out of slow elements better than my WRX does in 2nd gear  ; and Feinberg's CRX hit the same speed before braking for the very last slalom (after the big "lane change" straight) that my WRX did - and I was at full throttle about 20 ft before he was. :? :(

Congratulations to Art McDonald for winning ESP! :D

I'd like to add a HUGE thanks to all the timing and scoring people this weekend. And those who aren't normally T&S who helped out, too! And those who worked in multiple shifts doing various helpful things (you know who you are!!) You guys (and gals) had a whale of a task keeping up with everything and, despite the hiccups, really pulled through. :cheer:

We definitely learned some things that will help make future events (especially at Laurinburg) run a bit smoother. (I'll be sending a nice long email to Todd!) :)

And for everyone else, thank you for your patience as we worked through our technical difficulties. Please understand that the problems we had were NOT 'human error' problems as much as they were technical and other 'out of our control' issues. We appreciate all drivers who made adjustments to car class and numbers so we could see tham better. And we appreciate the starter spacing out the cars, resulting in fewer reruns.

Big thanks to Kevin Butler for his persistence in making sure Day 1 results were as accurate as humanly possible!!

I'll be tossing the Head of T&S torch back to Todd now.......whew!!!

Many people may not be aware that a very tired crew stayed late on Saturday and swept the entire course. Then, they went to town, purchased concrete, and patched what Dick and I called "The Grand Canyon" that developed on Saturday. I know that our very tired event chairs, Rob and Graham were part of that crew, as well our senior executive, Scott Johnson. I was too tired to do anything else.... so I wasn't there, but maybe one of you guys can mention the others that stayed. I suspect Sally and Ann were there too.

Also, on Friday, two of our novices showed up to help with setup, and I was so impressed by that. Special thanks to Bernie (2004 Corvette) and Gwen (Mini Cooper) for helping us out.

For the novices, in case you didn't realize it, you don't have to be an expert to help out with set up. There's plenty of sweepering, cone marking, and such that has to be done. And if you hang around the event chairs, you might learn something about course design.

I really appreciate how much work Rob and Graham put into this event, including the extra Sunday they went down weeks before to clean, mow, sweep, and design the course.

Christine, I wish you'd put out a tip jar. Nobody's services are more appreciated at the event than yours! I agree with Donnie, I"m terrible at actually taking a decent lunch to events so I'm delighted at having cheeseburgers and dogs available. Thank you!

I haven't decided if it is really a good thing or not, but this was by far the most difficult to drive, analytically challenging, mentally challenging course, I have ever driven. The number of gates that I knew I had to plan for three (or more) gates ahead and drive in a "special" way was more than I have ever had to deal with on a single course before. My brain was definitely at and perhaps slightly beyond capacity. Having said that, it was fun, and I was glad to have 2 days to figure it out.

It was the most fun course so far this year and we got to do some of what Laurinburg was meant for, IMHO.
- FIVE fast sweepers
- FAST 75' slaloms (for at least a few cones anyway)
- Longer courses than are possible at other sites
- LOTS of seat time (about 3 to 4 events worth!)

Thanks Graham and Rob and all the staff for getting us through the weekend. Golly Chris Peterson really jumped into the frying pan for taking on the T&S job this weekend. I commend her for her willingness to volunteer and the great effort she and her crew made to get us some results. Lesser organizations might not have ended up with any results (I've seen it happen elsewhere).

Because every event is different, and things are always changing, staying on top of the event operations procedure will always be a challenge. This weekend was a great reminder to anyone that needed it that we have not mastered the art of running an autox and can never be complacent if we expect to stay at the top of our game. But even a bad day for THSCC still seems to be a pretty good event!

Now Kevin and Rodney.... I can't wait til the next Lbg event in the fall. :)

Miles

That was definitely above and beyond the call of duty. The easy thing would have been to just move a few cones to avoid the hole, yet people stepped up and did what really needed to be done.

As always, THSCC is a fine organization with great members who always step up to meet a challenge.

Talking with Donnie Sunday, I realized that this course really did fit the title of "split personality." In eight years of doing this, I can't really recall anything quite like it. I think many people's opinions of the course changed over the period of the two days. Some that hated it Saturday, grew to respect and even love it by Sunday. I put myself in that category even though I couldn't manage to put it all together Sunday for any fast runs. Regardless in the end I really appreciated the challenge. There were sections of the course that bordered on the sublime, exiting the "P", taxiway "randomly spaced" slalom, and particularly the crossover leading into the fast sweeper. Those were the "cohones" sections which I really enjoy, then there were the slow, patient, early setup sections comprising most of the last 1/3 of the course. These sections were particularly tough because of the preceding fast stuff. Very challenging...

I would also like to apologize to anyone I might have offended when I was working Saturday in the bus. Sorry for being so cranky, but that was easily the most painful worker session I've ever had. I don't think I was swearing when on the radio, but I if I did and I offended you, please accept my apology. :-)

Finally, the fireants. Just a word of advice, check your pit area for fire ant hills in Laurinbug. I pitted entirely too close to one I guess, and ended up with about thirteen bites over the course of the weekend. This particularly sucked because I have a strong reaction to them, worse than a bee sting for me. I noticed my tire trailer picked up a couple hundred "castaways" which made it all the way home with me, leading to my recieving an additional 3 bites after getting home and unloading my trailer. This was easily the least pleasant part of the weekend for me...

Funny story about this....at one of the Laurinburg events last year, I came back to my pit after the first run group and noticed a little fireant epidemic had broken out. Somehow, last time I had been at the grocery store, a can of cat food had snuck out of the grocery bag and stayed in my trunk. I opened the can of cat food and placed it near the grassline away from my pit and it seemed to do a decent job of keeping the ants occupied and away from my stuff.

As one of the event chairs, (and I know Graham will agree) I want to thank everyone who helped with this event. First of all, I want to thank my mom, without whom this would not have been possible, second........

I do want to thank the people who came out Friday to help, Miles, Emmitt, Chris Overcash, Kevin Allen, and Vince, Gwen and Bernie. Not only did Emmitt help with set up, he drove the bus down and back.

Also, thanks to Rick Butters, Kevin Allen, Miles Beam, and Dick Rasmussen for taking over Novice Co-ordinator duties for the weekend with little prep. Thank you all for jumping in.

Thanks to Scott and Sally and Ann for helping with the test concrete patch. Scott apparently fingerpainted a lot when he was a kid, using his hand to get just the right texture to the finish of the patch

Mike and Stephen Westerfield did a great job spreading a very thin pool of workers over a very large area and being organized and on time.

Thank you to timing and scoring. I know Murphy got to you first and camped out. Never fails that this was the worst time/event that it could have happened....oh wait that is the law isn't it  Thanks to all of you for spending a bunch of extra time auditing, making sure that you had times to audit and for sitting up late (Chris, Kevin, and Eric) doing the raw sheet audit. :beerbuds:

Finally, big thanks to my co-event chair who did a lot of organizational background for this event and put a bunch of time into it .

I would like to thank Stacey and Katie for helping me out.

I wouldn't have been able to cook on my own.

Thanks for several people bringing me tarps when it started raining.
We have alot of good people in the club that will help out in a moments notice. Thanks again.
