Many people may not be aware that a very tired crew stayed late on Saturday and swept the entire course. Then, they went to town, purchased concrete, and patched what Dick and I called "The Grand Canyon" that developed on Saturday. I know that our very tired event chairs, Rob and Graham were part of that crew, as well our senior executive, Scott Johnson. I was too tired to do anything else.... so I wasn't there, but maybe one of you guys can mention the others that stayed. I suspect Sally and Ann were there too.
Also, on Friday, two of our novices showed up to help with setup, and I was so impressed by that. Special thanks to Bernie (2004 Corvette) and Gwen (Mini Cooper) for helping us out.
For the novices, in case you didn't realize it, you don't have to be an expert to help out with set up. There's plenty of sweepering, cone marking, and such that has to be done. And if you hang around the event chairs, you might learn something about course design.
I really appreciate how much work Rob and Graham put into this event, including the extra Sunday they went down weeks before to clean, mow, sweep, and design the course.
Christine, I wish you'd put out a tip jar. Nobody's services are more appreciated at the event than yours! I agree with Donnie, I"m terrible at actually taking a decent lunch to events so I'm delighted at having cheeseburgers and dogs available. Thank you!
I haven't decided if it is really a good thing or not, but this was by far the most difficult to drive, analytically challenging, mentally challenging course, I have ever driven. The number of gates that I knew I had to plan for three (or more) gates ahead and drive in a "special" way was more than I have ever had to deal with on a single course before. My brain was definitely at and perhaps slightly beyond capacity. Having said that, it was fun, and I was glad to have 2 days to figure it out.
It was the most fun course so far this year and we got to do some of what Laurinburg was meant for, IMHO.
- FIVE fast sweepers
- FAST 75' slaloms (for at least a few cones anyway)
- Longer courses than are possible at other sites
- LOTS of seat time (about 3 to 4 events worth!)
Thanks Graham and Rob and all the staff for getting us through the weekend. Golly Chris Peterson really jumped into the frying pan for taking on the T&S job this weekend. I commend her for her willingness to volunteer and the great effort she and her crew made to get us some results. Lesser organizations might not have ended up with any results (I've seen it happen elsewhere).
Because every event is different, and things are always changing, staying on top of the event operations procedure will always be a challenge. This weekend was a great reminder to anyone that needed it that we have not mastered the art of running an autox and can never be complacent if we expect to stay at the top of our game. But even a bad day for THSCC still seems to be a pretty good event!
Now Kevin and Rodney.... I can't wait til the next Lbg event in the fall.
