It's tire time again!! The Miata needs new shoes, corded Victos suck

205-55-14 on stock rims.

Any experience with the Ecsta's over the Victoracers? I am leaning toward the Ecstas as they look a little stickier, but wondered what experience others have had over the last year.

Thanks

Might as well buy Azenis 615s vs Victorracer 700s IMHO. Go with the 710s.

Last year I ran the Victoracers on my Camaro - 275-40-17 on 9 inch rims. This year I'm running the V710 315-35-17 on 11 inch rims. I might be driving a little better, but the wider tires have made a big difference. I think the V710 is most of the difference, rather than being wider.
Chris in the Pewter Trans Am has been running on Victoracers, but will have the same size V710s at Laurinburg. That might be a better guage of which tire is better, on a heavy car. I hope this helps.

From major event results it appears there is no doubt that for top level autocrossing the best Kumho by far is the 710. Lots of Vettes, Camaros, and Mustangs use the 710's and win Pro Solos and Tours. When budget realities conflict with go fast desires, Victoracers supposedly are longer lasting and don't change grip much before the tread is gone.

Rob,

I'm running 225/50/R14 Ecsta V700's, shaved to 4/32's. From what I've been told, they'll last longer than a full treaded selection. I shied away from the V710's for 2 reasons.

1. At the time I made my choice, I felt tread life was considered to be short.

2. If and when it rains at an event, I'll have more tire grip with the Ecsta V700's than the V710's (or Victoracer's).

I might have opted for the Victoracer's if they had a 225 offering. Since they didn't, I went with the Ecsta 700's. If you can squeeze a 225 width tire on your 5.5" rims, go for it. It should give you the ability to carry greater speeds through turns.

So far with 3-4 events under my belt, I have no complaints regarding grip. Also, I'm also pleased with the wear(or lack of it) that I'm seeing to date.

These are just my humble offerings. Hope they help rather than confuse.

V710's without a doubt. Why settled for less tire to save a few bucks? I believe durability will be good for 80 runs or so. But you had better hurry or else market demands will drive your tire selection :) or the lack there of.

soon as paycheck hits :) EOM.

Looks like I have already hit some of the size thing. 225's on backorder, 205's available. Is it worth trying to find the 225's?

Rob don't forget they also have the Avon Tech R in your size on TireRack and in stock. They come at 4/32 tread. Patrice was using those at track and autocross. So maybe he'll chime in on them. I spoke with him briefly about them and he seemed pretty impressed.

I know on the bigger cars like Dick said. C4 or C5 Vette you want V710s. All the national level guys are on those or Hoosiers. Try something else besides your old standy Victoracers. Not that they're bad or anything.

Any Kumho 710 you find is backordered anywhere there is no reason to go looking for, as there won't be any. Kumho's supply system is very sporadic as they only build race tires when they have a lull in their regular production and only ship them from Korea when they have enough to fill a container. Kumho USA doesn't have a clue when they will receive any until the factory notifies them a shipment is on the high seas. That's the biggest reason we don't even consider using Kumhos, even their factory sponsored drivers couldn't get a number of sizes last season right up to nationals.
I've heard some good things about the new Hancook R compounds and even the Avons are supposed to be better than the V700s. Bryan Hertwick ran the Hancooks and Steven Rankins/ Jon Krowlewitz ran the Avons at Sanford this past Sat., check the results as to how they did.

It looked to me that Brian was on Hoosiers.

Hertweck ran on 275/40/18 Hoosier A3S04's. He'll be running the Kooks at the Toledo Tour. - AB

RE: Avon Tyres

Paging Les Davis .....

I have been very happy with the Avon's in the cold weather events since November when I got them. However this weekend they really seemed to be giving up the ghost. Its hard to say for sure, since this was my first time on them at Sanford, and they also have many heat cycles in them and are nearly worn out. Plus I had twice as much horsepower this weekend than I have in the past. :D  However, I was talking with Steven Rankins about them this weekend, and he was strongly of the opinion that the Avon's are a cold weather tire. They are undoubtedly a great cold weather tire, but questionable when the mercury rises. I believe Patrice ran them all year last year, maybe he will chime in.

Either way, in the coming months I will have direct experience in the same car on Avon's, Hoosiers's, and V710s and will be able to give a more proper comparison...

From what I've been toldby a friend that tested for them, Avon has changed their compound since last year to make them more competitive.
Sorry, thought I saw a set of Hancooks by Bryan's car Sat.
