I use a CG Lock on the Miata on the street. It's worth the money I paid for it, and that wasn't $42...

It is best thing we have used for baby seats as you can REALLY crank that thing down and I don't know if I would want to try it on myself. ;) What it does is act like a winch. The belt threads through and you ratchet it down and it twists the belt around the center axle. To release you really need to unlatch the belt first.

I believe that Rick Butters is using one of those this year. I never looked at his too closely but it sure looks like the same thing and I'm pretty sure he mentioned it was originally designed for child car seats.

From what I heard and saw, Rick seemed to be fairly pleased with it but I think he was still in the "testing" phase. Hopefully he will see this post and chime in with his current feedback.

You clamp both belts right against the buckle piece.

FYI how does the CG lock (or homemade equivalent) compare to twisting the belt latch two or three times to hold the belts in place? I've done this with my Mustang and it was pretty secure for autocross use (probably not a good idea when high speed impacts are possible even with airbags).

Thanks!

Quilty as charged. I'm have been using the above car seat lock and it works reasonbly well. As Richard described, it winches excess seat belt around its spindle. The way I have used it is to "lock" the should belt in place by pulling on it and then maintaining tension on it and then snug the belt down tight using the infant seat mechanism. The unit is a little large and heavy enough that you need to be careful that you don't slam a door on it, but other than that, it works well.

I have a couple of those Mighty Tites for the girls seats. I never thought about using one for racing. I'm going to have to try that in Sanford.

Thanks for the idea Rick.

Dick, I'd say pretty similarly. FWIU the idea of the CG lock and the clip I described is to hold the lap belt tight while allowing the torso part to move with the inertia reel.

With your size Todd you can't slide very far in a Miata. I know I have one leg on the door handle and the other on the e-brake handle. I would imagine you fit about as well as I do.

You don't sit in a Miata you wear it.

You're right. My butt just about touches both the door and the tranny tunnel. So I guess race seats aren't really necessary!!!

I really just need upper body restraint and I have the torso strap for that. It works well for me.

Ok, I tried out the "Mighty-Tite" this weekend at Sanford and I "LOVE IT". It is a bit bulky and you need to find a spot that works for you, but otherwise, it is nice to get in the car and crank it down to a level that feels good. After a run, I just release the belt which then lets me release the "Mighty-Tite" and it is ready for the run.
