The morning photos are now available for viewing:

http://home.att.net/~kevinmallen/greenv ... orning.htm

I have lots of photos from afternoon, and they'll be up soon...

So, once again I ask, "Did anybody get pictures of ME?" :D

(I need to remember to give the camera to Simon before I go run next time)

Great shots Kevin!

A couple of comments...

1) For seom reason I don't think the cone Rick Butters has put into the air will return to the box.

2) I think there is something on your camera lens. In every picture of Dustin, there is a BIG white spec on at least one of his tires.

This is a very good pic, even if it is of Whitney. :P Shows you just how far you can/should be looking ahead.

Novices take note! This is what you should try to do as well.

Oh yeah that would be cool! I predict they will look bright white and will be mesmerizing to watch. Now if we could also get a shiny silver disco ball to hang over the bus that would just be the icing on the cake

Good job on the photos Kevin, as usual. When we get to Sanford give the camera before your run and tell me where you want the shot taken from. I'll do it. Since you usually get all the rest of us.

Graham

I never get tired of hearing this question.

The answer is more complicated than just telling you a magical series of numbers. It depends on the lighting as to what's possible. It depends on what you want the photo to look like as to what aperture value & exposure to use. You just have to know exactly what does what as far as visual effect & then make your own decisions about what settings to use based on what look you're going for.

In general, though - to freeze a car & soften the background, you want > 200mm lens, f/5 or larger, < 1/250 sec. To streak-blur the background like in the side shot of Whitney, follow the car precisely, and use exposure > 1/60 sec. (and whatever aperture that corresponds to - but the smaller the better, as you'll get more of what's not "moving" in focus).

^^true. i guess i should have asked just one or the other and set the camera to that priority so it would auto select the other. right now my shutter speeds are too fast and i'm not feeling the speed.

fun stuff!

Well, the thing about auto exposure is that not all cars are medium gray.

If you set your exposure for 1/60 sec & let the camera set the aperture, guess what happens when Miles rolls by? (car is gray, background is very dark) Guess what happens when Randy rolls by? (car is gray, background is very bright) Guess what happens when the car's lights are on, and they're pointed directly at the camera? (lights are medium yellow, everything else is almost black)

Just be sure you keep up with your exposure compensation if you're going to use the auto modes.

Looks like your main problem is equipment - were you using a point&shoot camera?

If you want visually-striking racing photos, you'll benefit from a longer lens, a bigger aperture, and full manual control (including the zoom action -- electrically-controlled zoom sucks). I like the one of the R32 in the slalom (p5?), but the sharply-focused cars in the background are distracting. Too much depth of field. You could've used a longer lens & a bigger aperture to get the car in focus and the background fuzzy.

If you have equipment limitations there are ways to work around them. If your autofocus sucks, prefocus. If your zoom action sucks, prezoom. Then you just wait for your subject to arrive at the prefocussed, prezoomed location & click it. If your available aperture is too big, select a less distracting background or try to get closer so that the background will be farther away.

Keep at it, and be sure to get some WRX photos next time. 8)
