First the back story.

The airbag light started flashing when I was driving home from work yesterday and it annoyed the crap out of me. After researching, I have found that it is blinking the "D-Sensor failure" code. So rather than try and fix the damn thing, I am thinking of just replacing it with a non airbag wheel. I could not find anything in the SCCA rulebook concerning steering wheels.

So my question to you is this....

Would replacing the steering wheel still be legal for STT/STS2?

Not a rules guy. not even sure about the airbag, but I think it's legal to replace the steering wheel in stock class even as long as the wheel diameter is maintained.

No suits needed here I hope. This thread isn't about event/club operations...

Unfortuantely the wheel has to stay stock, including airbag. This is because ST inherits that part of the prep allowance from Stock category and airbag changes aren't allowed in Stock.

Bummer.

Now for the part I might need a flame suit for: Go ahead and change it I say. It's not like an alternate wheel is going to all of a sudden make you even .01% faster. No one locally is going to care. Maybe THSCC should start making a list of accepted changes that are unprotestable no matter the category. I'm sort of serious.

No steering wheel replacement in stock class. Don't know about STT.

Good rule of thumb...

If it doesn't explicitly say you CAN, then you CAN'T.

Well that blows chunks!!!!!! :insert barfing smilie here:

I really do not want to try to figure out how to replace a D-sensor (whatever the hell that is!)

Maybe I'll do it after the Pro in ATL. I'd hate to have my runs DSQ'd over a steering wheel.

I was just kidding I guess. Didn't know the rules exactly, so I was just throwing out what I thought I remembered reading. Guess not from the posts above.

So, what about if your car doesn't have a bag? Is all this still true?
I thought we looked at it for Steve's car (he doesn't have a bag) and I thought we read this. We never changed it though.

Sorry for the unnecessary post guys, I found the rule.

SCCA Solo II Rule Book 14.2.D says...

Quote:
Alternate steering wheels are allowed except that steering wheels with an integral airbag may not be changed.

What kind of stupid rule is that. All i want to do is get rid of the damn flashing light!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :banghead: :furious: :help:

Non-airbag cars can change the wheel in Stock +- 1" dia from original size. The reason they freak over the airbag thing is because of liability/legal issues apparently.

Ok, I think that's what I remembered reading.

Todd, do the rules state anything about removing the light behind the dash?
C&C?

Take a little piece of black electrical tape and put it over the light. Low-tech, simple, and LEGAL solution. :)

That sounds like a good cheap solution. Tape it is.

I can't claim that's an original idea. I stole it from Ron. :)

Funny because I got a PM suggesting the same thing from another Miata owner. Must be a popular "mod".

Well, my car won't ever be going to a National event.

First thing I did was get that bomb out of my face and and replace a steering wheel that was literally coming apart in my hands. (They'd be all black after driving it to work.)

But my motor mounts are stock. :P

Maybe an ITR in DS.
