Just guessing here. No rule book in front of me.

It would probably be legal in some Prepared or Mod class. My guess would be Mod though.

What does he have?

To be legal with a tube frame the car would need to be legal for GT 1,2,3, or Lite. This is per SCCA GCRs. It would also be ok in D and E Mod. This is assuming this is a production based car.

More specifics would help but basically what George said.

He can check the various SCCA rules on line but I suspect the car is already built to the rules of some other sanctioning body (circle track?).

Best bet if he just wants to give it a try is assume D or E Mod. E Mod if over 2000 cc.

FYI, my C Mod Formula Ford is REQUIRED by the rules to be tube frame.

I believe some rebodied old Busch cars have been seen in CP.
Then there are the Legend cars, the formula SAE cars, the Cobra replicas, the Caterhams, et al. There are a lot of tube frame cars AXing.

he told me it is not a street based platform. it is probably a pinto motor on a tube frame with a sheet metal body. wake county speedway fare i think. mucho hp.

so when you say rebodied busch cars, do you mean it is possible to mount a street car body to a tube frame? my friend might be interested in that.

If it is a Pinto motored tube frame it would prpbably end up in E Mod since it is greater than 2 liters. If it matches the track width and wheelbase of a Pinto within the tolerances in the GCRs, it would fit in a prepared class. There would also be rim width restrictions too. He would also need to be able to turn right as well as left.

Is this guy wondering about strict SCCA legality or about being able to come out and play at THSCC?

For the latter - if it's got four wheels and is relatively safe*, then I'm sure we can find a place for him to play! It would be need to see some roundy-round cars out at the events.

* Passes tech, doesn't look like it will fall apart on course, and isn't as small as a kart. Of course, final determination would be made by Tech and/or the VPs.
