Thanks for all of the opinions. The main reason I even considered changing cars is that owning a Type R can be a pain (for me anyway). I just find myself worrying about it all of the time at restaurants, etc. (door dings and theft). I just feel like I would not be as worried about an STi since they are not as rare as Type R's. The STi is the only car that I would consider as a replacement to the Type R.
How is the gas mileage for an STi? Also, the salesman said that it was not possible to get a factory service manual so I could perform my own maintanance; is this true? Kevin, did you say parts for Subaru's are more expensive than other Japanese cars?
Also, I agree with Graham. Owning a high-performance car does make me look forward to the drive to work (and anywhere else).
No matter how you drive the STi, you arent getting more than 20 mpg, and around 200-250 miles to a tank. (I refill at 1/4 and those are my milages).
Parts are generally more expensive for Subarus than any other Japanese car I have seen -- yes.
You can't get the factory service manual, but you can get a 24hr subscription to their online service, and download all the PDFs within that day. It is a PITA since they make you DL a chapter at a time, but you can get it.
You will still worry about door dings. If you worry now, you will be worrying about your 25-30K car getting dinged.
I ALWAYS enjoy driving my car everywhere, but I put roughly 50-60K miles worth of driving a year on a car. I would much rather get 'quality' miles rather than 'just miles.' It takes something technically difficult to challenge your skill driving in an STi- IMHO. I would just like to be driving up to the cars potential rather than driving it around. The car lives above 3K constantly, and there isnt a 'economy gear' on an STi like there is on a 'vette. In 6th at 80, I am crusing at 3K.
