The president of the East Coast Timing Association came out this past Saturday and talked with us about the type of work that they do when they patch the concrete. Basically they clean out any significant holes and fill it with quikrete or a similar brand of easy to mix concrete.

They are going to be down there for the next two weekends doing repairs and we thought it would be nice if we offered to help them.

I'm planning on going to Laurinburg this Saturday and need a few people to go help out. I know it's a long drive for work that's no fun, so the first 10 people that commit and show up will get a free entry to an autocross.

I'll post more details (schedule and needed tools) later this week.

PM me or reply here if you would like to help out.

Volunteers
Rick Butters - Saturday 3/5
Les Davis - Saturday 3/5

Kevin Hoff - Sunday 3/13

Would some check with the airport about cleaning off the best concrete area. I know they have a tractor with a large brush that would do a nice job clearing the weeds. Hell, if they would let me, I would volunteer to do it.

Bumping this to the top because it's important.

We share the Laurinburg conrete with other people, and to be honest, we probably do the most damage to things. The *right* thing to do is be out there and help fix it.

Jason and I will be there this Saturday, the East Coast Timing Association people will be there this Sat. and Sunday, as well as the next weekend.

They do this (and more) every year, we typcally do nothing. Doesn't sound right, does it?

Schedule:

Sat March 5, 8AM-5PM
Sun March 6, 8AM-2PM

Sat March 12, 8AM-5PM
Sun March 13, 8AM-2PM

I'd like to see Tarheelers there both weekends, any day is fine. The more people that are there the more effective the patching will be.

We'll learn a little tech on the job, and probably be applying that to a future work day where we might try to ressurect a few other parts of the site.

If we don't start maintaining the site, we WILL STOP going there.

Basically, if you're not working on the bus, or at the rallycross, then you should be helping with the runway in Laurinburg. As Jason said, this is a big deal, and your efforts will be rewarded with free entry to an event.

Scott

We've only had two people volunteer so far. I've put their names in the original post.

We need to start doing our share of the repair work at this site.

I can help on Sunday after the rallycross if there isn't field cleanup work needed there.

Is pavement patching a weather dependent activity? I would hate to drive to Laurinburg early tomorrow morning and find no one there because of the likelihood of rain.

It looks like the rain is supposed to be spotty, so maybe we can still get a little done. Scott and I are leaving bright and early. :)

Rick, PM me your cellphone number just in case plans change.

Scott, how did the clean up day go? Did you learn anything useful or interesting?

The work day went well. Rick Butters, Les Davis, Jason Mauldin and I made the trip (from Raleigh, Raleigh, Cary and Durham respectively).

They had 5 people at one point, from Alabama, Pennsylvania, Deleware and Georgia.

By the end of the day, it was 2 of them and 4 of us.

We put down abot 12 bags of concrete, and probably moved about that much debris off of the course.

To prep the holes, you scrape and blow out anything loose, wet it a little bit then put the concrete in. They have a few back-pack style blowers that are far superior to anything we had out there for the test and tune.

The most interesting thing I noticed was how good some of the laurinburg concrete really is. We tend to use what's clean, and that means we are using the ECTA areas. They sweep it every event of the year, and they also put down weed killer, not to mention the patching.

As it turns out the 3 or 4 slabs of concrete along the outer length of the main runway are almost all in good shape. I just assumed they were bad because we never run on them much. We don't run there becase the ECTA doesn't maintain them (so it seems). Everytime they sweep they put all teh rocks to that side, and it gets overgrown because they don't spray for weeds there. With a little bit of work on our part we could easily be using the full width of the main runway, for nearly the full length of it.

There is one big hole that limits access to this good concrete via the crossover at the end of the runway. If we patch that hole we can run a much wider radius sweeper :) If we have enough people volunteering next weekend, we should be able to use the ECTA mixer for our own concrete to fix that oen spot (probably 3 bags - it's a big spot).

I'm planning to rent a sweeper in the near future to clean up some extra area. We might also want to spray a little weed killer in a few spots.
