The rule books for Solo II and road racing are now online.

Solo II

Road racing

It looks like they are free for anyone to use so now there are no excuses for being illegal. Well OK there is one less excuse.

When I try to download the manuals Windows gives me an error message that Acrord32 had performed and illegal operation. I can download other PDF files without any problem. It would appear that Acrord32 is the Adobe download program. Am I the only one running old software. Windows 98, Adobe 5.0 and Explore 6.0.

Any constructive suggestions on what will fix this problem?

when you download it, save it rather than opening it online. then open the local copy.

Acrord32 is the Acrobat Reader program itself, and (IMO) version 5.0 is better than 6.0 anyway. 6.0 takes about a minute to start up the first time, and if there are any cool features that 6.0 adds, I haven't used them.

I think the issue is likely the size of the download- these are both big files. Patrick's suggestion of doing a right-click "Save As" and then viewing the local copy is a good one.

I believe this file does require the latest version. Just hearsay though.

As noted, in general, always download the file and read it locally. The plugin through the web browser is just slow.

With all the plugins installed it loads for me in about 5sec and without the added plugins it loads in 1sec.

Now to speed up Acrobat 6. Try this:

Open Windows Explorer and go find the Acrobat Reader subfolders.
By default it would be C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader.
Now under that you have 2 folders that you care about.
Optional and plug_ins.

Open the plug_ins folder so that the contents are in the right window pane. You should see a number of folders and plug ins.
Move all of them from plug_ins to Optional folder, except...
EWH32.api , printme.api, Search.api.
Keep those 3 files in the plug_ins folder. Everything else to Optional.

Now go start Acrobat Reader and watch how fast it loads and works.
Those 3 remaining plug ins will let you read, print, search PDF files.
It works great with PDF files that have text/graphics.
If you get errors about a plug in not available you'll have to move some back from the Optional to plug_ins folder.

On older machines this speeds things up a lot because you just removed a lot of bloat from plug ins that aren't needed to read a plain PDf file.

I've had good success with this method.

Note that if you update the Reader then you'll have to do this again as it will probably load them back in again.

Graham

Should this thread be moved to the saved section?
