I was going to weigh my MR2 and CRX but my backup floor jack decided to quit working. I did manage to weigh the CRX and I have some old data from my former green Miata. I was trying to get some bearing on how much the different STS2 cars weigh (before attempting to lighten them) to figure out which may have the most potential. As soon as I retrieve my primary floor jack out of the trunk of my Laser (busted, lonely and located in a field in Four Oaks), I will get the data on the MR2 and update this thread.

The corner weights for the CRX were meaningless since I didn’t bother to level the scales or anything but the total weight is accurate. I do have the corner weights from my old Miata just in case anybody is interested. In their nearly stock trim, the CRX has a good 100+lb advantage on the Miata. Both cars were weighed with a full tank of gas but since both have nearly the same capacity, the data isn’t going to change much if they were emptied. I do know that the early Miatas can run with nearly an empty tank of gas but I have no idea about the CRX.

Autotrader.com lists the ‘88 CRX Si’s weight at 2108 and the ’91 Miata’s at 2116. The CRX (the good?) nearly spot on to what I observed but my Miata (the fat?) was obviously a little on the high side. Their weight may have been for a base model and certainly the ~40lb roll bar isn’t helping matters but mine was also missing a few stock items so I would still say their figures are a hair low. They list the ’85 MR2 at 2250lbs but I have a feeling mine will be heavier than that (the porky?). If I get home early enough tomorrow, I may pull the jack out of the Volvo and put the MR2 on the scales. If anybody has a ‘94+ Miata they want to weigh for another data point, I’m sure we can arrange something. Autotrader.com lists the ’94 Miata at 2293 for whatever that is worth.

Anyway, the point of all this? None, really! It looks like to me that the CRX can easily wind up in the 1950lb range with the early Miata not too far behind. Considering their nearly equal power outputs, it would be tough to pick a winner based on stats alone. I think the MR2 will wind up being the clear underdog no matter what the type of course. The ‘94+ Miata will probably have an advantage on “horsepower” courses while the CRX and early Miatas may have an advantage on tighter and/or more slippery courses. Needless to say, it will be fun finding out next year!

I might have a '95 to compare quite soon. It's supposedly a base model with the power steering standalone and AC being the only options. We'll see if the ad (and Mazda's cool VIN site) are accurate soon.

Muhahahahahahahaha

Actually that is not true. An 88 CRX can get that low, the later models get saddled with heavier seat belts, bigger door bars, bigger gas tank, heavier rear control arms and heavier bumpers.

From what I have read, no. The CRX needs at least 1/2 tank of gas IIRC. Dustin how does your CRX do WRT gas?

Jim, does your 88 have power steering?

If my damn oversized bearings show up, my CRX will be running by New Years. I plan to take it to the company scales in New Bern to see what it will weigh. It should be in full on STS2 mode by then.

Thanks for posting the info!

If light is what you're after, then for sure the 88 is the car to have. I think the difference is in the neighborhood of 100lb. Now on the flip side, the 90-91 cars made slightly better power. Which may be irrelevant if you guys intend to go into the ECUs at all.

I'm struggling with what to do with mine, I really am. Part of me wants to get out and sell it to Bowie. The other part of me wants to keep it, since as Whitney demonstrated, it's obviously fast, even with no front shocks.

Automotive indecision owns me. :(

Edit: Ryan, I'm not so sure on the fuel starve issue. I'm pretty sure we ran mine banging off the E and it never starved. Maybe the CRX has a different tank than the hatchbacks in STS? I know Scott's ITC car, an EF hatch, fuel starves with anything less than half a tank in it. We learned this the hard way at Road Atlanta several weeks ago.

Well, I meant the 88 CRX (Si to be really specific) since that is the one I happen to own...

Mine does not have power steering. I'm not all that crazy about the slow ratio but I guess I'll get used to it.

Jim.. sounds like your old Miata might have been a little porky! My '92 weighed in at Roebling at exactly 2245lbs..that was with;

Stock 14"s from a '99 with Azenis
AGX's with Ground Controls (wonder where I got those? )
1.8 liter motor
Power steering
A/C
manual windows
no cruise
cd player with 2 speakers
Schimmel rollbar (~50lbs)
Full interior
no spare
the remains of the softtop
no baby teeth
full tank of gas
2 sets of 6pt harnesses

I'd be interested to know what the norm is....

Keep it! The class should be a blast next year.

Heck, I'm still not 100% decided on the CRX. I may wind up running the MR2 if the weight isn't too much of an issue.

That sounds about dead-on what mine weighed (2231). While I did have a few extra options compared to yours, I was missing some carpet/sound insulation and such. Note that if it wasn't clear, I didn't have the soft top in mine but I did have the hard top on it. Strangely enough, the hard top was a few pounds *lighter* than the soft top. I think the motors (1.6L -vs- 1.8L) are pretty much a wash.

Yeah...Ryan and I were thinking we'd go and show that RWD alien guy that a CRX is where it's at  Now if you show up and kick everyone's arse in a CRX, not onlycan we not make fun of you for having an MR2, we also...just got our arses kicked

Prediction: STS2 will burn the STS guys to the ground in 05. You just wait.

Dude, I have been meaning to PM you back but DONT SELL THE DAMN CAR!!! Your problems are minor and can be fixed realtively on the cheap. If the Tokicos suck, get the AGX's. While not the best out there, they certainly seem to last. Dustin Fredrickson has them on his Rallyx CRX no problems at all!

You have have a fun, cheap, and generally reliable autox/TT/HPDE car. Dont toss it away!

We also get own3d because Jim bought his CRX for $300 AND IT RUNS!!

Never had a problem AutoX or RallyX. I regularly end the day on much less than 1/4 tank, and have NEVER had starvation issues. Mine is a '91, but I don't recall the fuel system being any different between the years. The hatch, o.t.o.h, would likely be different due to the back seat position, but that's just a guess.

The AGX's have held up well for me for a year of AutoX and year of RallyX. I believe Kevin Allen also had a set that held up well (better than Koni's, iirc) on one of his Subarus.

I don't have a Miata that's legal for STS2. But maybe Karl will let me co-drive the CRX next year so I can whoop up on some Holton booty.

Hey Karl, need some help working on the CRX? ;)
