I was going to weigh my MR2 and CRX but my backup floor jack decided to quit working. I did manage to weigh the CRX and I have some old data from my former green Miata. I was trying to get some bearing on how much the different STS2 cars weigh (before attempting to lighten them) to figure out which may have the most potential. As soon as I retrieve my primary floor jack out of the trunk of my Laser (busted, lonely and located in a field in Four Oaks), I will get the data on the MR2 and update this thread.
The corner weights for the CRX were meaningless since I didn’t bother to level the scales or anything but the total weight is accurate. I do have the corner weights from my old Miata just in case anybody is interested. In their nearly stock trim, the CRX has a good 100+lb advantage on the Miata. Both cars were weighed with a full tank of gas but since both have nearly the same capacity, the data isn’t going to change much if they were emptied. I do know that the early Miatas can run with nearly an empty tank of gas but I have no idea about the CRX.
Autotrader.com lists the ‘88 CRX Si’s weight at 2108 and the ’91 Miata’s at 2116. The CRX (the good?) nearly spot on to what I observed but my Miata (the fat?) was obviously a little on the high side. Their weight may have been for a base model and certainly the ~40lb roll bar isn’t helping matters but mine was also missing a few stock items so I would still say their figures are a hair low. They list the ’85 MR2 at 2250lbs but I have a feeling mine will be heavier than that (the porky?). If I get home early enough tomorrow, I may pull the jack out of the Volvo and put the MR2 on the scales. If anybody has a ‘94+ Miata they want to weigh for another data point, I’m sure we can arrange something. Autotrader.com lists the ’94 Miata at 2293 for whatever that is worth.
Anyway, the point of all this? None, really!

It looks like to me that the CRX can easily wind up in the 1950lb range with the early Miata not too far behind. Considering their nearly equal power outputs, it would be tough to pick a winner based on stats alone. I think the MR2 will wind up being the clear underdog no matter what the type of course. The ‘94+ Miata will probably have an advantage on “horsepower” courses while the CRX and early Miatas may have an advantage on tighter and/or more slippery courses. Needless to say, it will be fun finding out next year!
