I did it the opposite from you (not to be confused with wrong) and never really had a problem with that turn. My only logic (since the distance was the same either direction) was I can get closer to the pivot cone when it's right beside my door.

Either way, brake late and you were screwed.

I did it that way on all runs. Just felt better to me. I honestly doubt doing it the "right" way would get you any more time than a way that "feels" good (when they differ). I'd like to think I had a little success. ;-)

As for the "no talent" section, I think Mike inferred a little more than was intended from that comment. We were past the pivot walking back and were just in what was a long straight, which was all the person making the comment was referring to. I seriously doubt the person who made the comment thinks that pivot cones or even that first left hander out of the start were corners that anyone could be fast on. That's *my* interpretation having heard the same comment, anyway. One thing that seems to be a trend at Sanford is that you can take no feature for granted.--Donnie

I was just poking fun at y'all. You poor Miata drivers with no torque :)

I took the piviot cone on the passanger side all but one time cause I could go strait into my brakeing zone and stay on the throttle a little longer compared to the one time that I took it on the drivers side, As a rule I usually take pivito cones on the driver side because I fell I can get closer but on this one it just made more sence to me to take in on the passanger side.

I'm glad people liked the course - we designed it to have something for everyone! BTW, the Viper club used parts of the same course on Saturday, but it was more open and faster (except for the finish). I think their fast times were around 54 secs. On the "drag strip" section there definitely is no substitute for cubic inches!

Unfortunately, this was my last auto-x with the Tarheel club, since I will be moving to Indy near the end of the year. I've enjoyed running with everyone the last 4 seasons. Maybe I'll see you at Peru!

Everyone take care - and remember the Caterham is always for sale! :)

I want to thank everyone who helped with the event. They made it so that Phil and I did not have to run around like crazy fixing too many problems.

Rick Butters, Mike Whitney, Adam Ligon all helped set up the course for both our event and the Vipers, as well as pre-tested the wireless.

Thanks to Graham who helped remark the course and for helping out with the Mob O' Novices that we had. And Carl Fisher for driving the bus back.

I'm glad everyone (hopefully) liked the course, we tried to make sure it was challenging but fun for everyone especially as it was the last points event.

Thanks to Mark Senior for letting me drive his car for my last run after I got "screwed" in mine. :)

As one of the "mob o novices" I can say I had a great time. Everyone was super helpful, the course was very interesting, and the burgers were outstanding.

Can't wait for the next one, gonna have to bring the wife and my dad out too.

I most enjoyed it as well. Couldn't drive to save my life, what with all the slaloms, but enjoyed it no less. Thanks Mike for letting me beat on Tom's old car.

Had a good time too! Good course, nice weather and good food on site! I felt like the event ran quite well especially considering we took on quite a few additions. Something on the order of a 140 cars. Good job Rob and Phil.

I would agree with Mike that the 1st part of the course wasn't for people without talent. I stayed on the edge of traction coming out of the start onto the runway. Blew the turnaround 3 times! Man do I suck at those. I tried it once in reverse(to me) with the passenger door against the pivot cone and didn't like it. As far as the HP thing. Low traction coming out of the turnaround. There was no way I was getting my measley 300hp down on the ground. I was spitting up marbles like mad. But charging into that first Chicago box looking element was a rush.

Good way to end the seasons points events. Now I'm curious to see how our new site looks and runs.

Graham

I have to add some more THANKS! for all the great people that make this club truly shine -

Phil - for all his hard work despite his impending move and, ah, "domestic" pressures to be at home packing rather than driving to Sanford 3 days in a row :) Phil has been a pleasure to work with on course designs because (1) he doesn't design impossibly tight course elements, and (2) he doesn't use too many cones :) Those are my 2 pet peeves about most novice (and some experienced!!!) course designers.

Rob- for the same reasons as Phil above (except the moving thing!) and fof working his butt off all weekend and keeping a great attitude about everything :)

Adam - for helping out at setup and doing a great job as worker coordinator, despite his constant bitching about everything on Sunday. Bad day, Adam?

Rick - for lending a LOT of help during setup!

Carl and Emmie - for coming out Sunday, not driving (!!) and helping T&S/auditing. AND Carl drove the bus home. Kick ass!

Aaron - for coming back to run the Viper event. That was a great money maker for us and I hope we can continue to do it in the future. The Viper folks are fun to work with and we get so see some NEAT hardware (that MB was more impressive than all the Vipers put together, though :))

Todd - for being a truly exceptional and easy to work with chief of T&S.

T&S - for managing to deal with the added complexity of not being able to see the car crossing the finish.

Brenda and Christine for the food!

To all the poor stickies workers who all realized QUICKLY that their job was the hardest one at the event! Don't understimate how difficult that is!

And everyone else who thanklessly does their regular hard work. This club kicks ass because of all of you.

Now, to pat ourselves on the back - I can say that this was a 100% successful first event with the wireless. As far as I know there were ZERO equipment related faults or reruns. There was one timer mis-step (out of 520+ runs) which may or may not have been a timer problem - someone may have walked through the lights. I also believe that the fixes we made to the bus power wiring also have greatly improved the performance and reliability of the timing system - low voltage was affecting the signal strength of our timer earlier this year and last year.

So the wireless finish let us stay off of the taxiway. Staying off the taxiway helps us keep from bending cars. It will definitely continue to be used in the future, but I doubt we will choose to rely on it every event since right now there is no backup or redundancy. Most likely, next time we're at Sanford we will try out a wireless *start* instead and see if T&S likes that better.

It's great to have options.

Well we all have to do what we are good at right?
And it sure wasn't driving that day. Or being a pyshic mechanic, since my "fixes" to eh 944 didn't work and it crapped out at the begining of the 3rd run, so I never bothered for the 4th

I'm not sure that's a good idea. It's nice for the raw sheets person to be able to look at the start line and go ahead and queue up the cars on the raw sheets in order before they even get to the actual start. It's also nice being able to do that on *your* schedule, not when someone is radio'ing in the car about to start or giving you a cone call. Radio'ing in the car at the start needs to also be done as a check, but having a line of 3-6 cars at the start all the time helps us keep that queue filled.

Raw sheets is a *tough* job and while it may be minor, I'd hate to take away a check and balance that we currently have. I think we can live far easily not seeing the finish than we could if we couldn't see the start. Of course, I welcome the opinions of any of the other VASTLY more experienced T&S workers we have than myself.

I think we can setup a queue going out to start that will bring the competitors by the bus in order to help out the raw sheet person. That way, you get a snapshot of the running order, and if you miss something, it can get caught by the starter. - AB

P.S. - I have a large trophy in my car for you Donnie. I'll give it to you Wednesday night.
