I went Saturday and Sunday. Rob is right. Not a challenging course. It was intended to be a cross between a road course and an autox. Saturday was the course Rob described. 105 seconds was the best run by a fully prepped car. The higher times were in the 120's. My best run was in the 110 with my average in 112. Sunday we ran the course backwards with the V element and the pivot cone removed. That made the runway into 2 - 1/8 mile drag strips with a box in the middle. The best run was 50 seconds by the same prepped car. I ran 53 and 54 seconds. The average in group IIG was about 54 seconds. Didn't have enough HP for the long straights to run down the prepped cars and Z06s.
Most of the cars were trailered in. I was the only car in group IG (equivalent to AS). The guys in IIG is where the bulk of the C4's were. They are mostly BSP cars then there is IIIG which would be ASP or SM2 equivalents. More or less. I beat many of the IIG guys and some of the IIIG guys. Including many of the stock C5s in IIH. There are some really good autocrossers in the group but most are road racers.
Saturday things were a little messy. Some officers that were supposed to help with the event didn't make it up from FL. They were training a new person for T&S and Ann ended up auditing. They have a unique format and tried to make a 7 event day instead of the usual 4-5 event day. Each event is 2 runs. They do double laps and that caused them grief because a rerun meant running both laps again. That could have been handled better. Sunday went a lot smoother and we were done and packed up for home by 5pm. When we got ready to leave the last cars were finishing up. They also rented local college kids as course workers and didn't give them enough instruction. By Sunday they got the hang of it. But hey, I didn't have shag cones all day so I was fine with it
So while it could stand more structure and organization it wasn't terrible. Since these folks travel from all over NC, SC, VA, GA, FL, TN and OH they don't care if the event runs until dark. They come to race and won't stop until it is over. See they don't do local club racing. All their events count for Regional, Divisional, and National at the same time.
All in all I had a good time. Did about 25 runs in 2 days, got to see some nice fiberglass cars, and got to meet a bunch of people I've talked to via email and never met in person. Also got some great ideas on what to do and not do if I want to convert my car to a SCCA-BSP/NCCC-IIG class car or worse, IIIG-RP, race prepared
Rob did beat some of the Vettes and quietened a few drivers down. Between the silly grin on his face and the confused look on theirs. That was really funny. Between us we didn't let down the Tarheels Club
Oh and Miles, keep the C4 for one more year. I'll probably run AS next year then it's up in the air what I do with the car...
