For anyone who is interested. There are about 30 slots open. You don't have to own a Corvette or even like them

If you are interested contact Mike Bohannan (email below).

==============================================

CORVETTE AUTOCROSS

WHAT: NCCC Autocross

WHEN: Sept. 4, 5, and 6 (Labor Day Weekend)

WHERE: Old Sanford Airport, Sanford NC

We are hosting a 3-day, 21-event autocross at the location shown above. Each driver will get 2 runs per event so you will get 14 runs per day or 42 runs for the weekend.

The event is limited to 60 entries (not counting host club and worker) each day.

The National Council of Corvette Clubs (NCCC) is the sanctioning body and the event will be run under the guideline of the NCCC Rulebook. Non Corvettes run in the guest class. The same safety items required by SCCA are required by NCCC.

The event is open to all drivers, and is open to spectators also.

The normal NCCC course is a little more open and longer then the typical SCCA type of course, therefore we are not encouraging NOVICE driver to enter.

The entry fee is $50.00 per day or $130.00 for the 3 days. Lunch will be provided on Sat and Sun for the all entries. Registration is pre-registration only.

For additional information you can contact me as follows:

vettmike@mindspring.com or mike.c.bohannan@lmco.com

Hope to see some of you at the event.

Mike

He went and I did too, Imagine the comments I got considering that other than a Camaro SS, I was the only non-Vette there, and actually the Camaro should count as it is sort of a Vette.

The course I ran on Sat. was long over 100secs. Graham ran 110, I ran 118secs. (I still beat about 1/4 of the Vettes) It was a big strait, followed by a big Chicago box - 70-80mph before brakes, 60+ for me.

Another straight, something to slow you down. Another strait, a turnaround. They then on the taxiway did a 45-50 pace "slalom" then a tight 30 pace slalom  Then a sweeper then you went around again. It was fun, but not too challenging.

I'll let Graham fill you in on the rest.

BTW He will be bummed if you leave him alone in A Stock :(

Rob, I'm just doing some long range planning. I hope to keep the Vette at least another year but things could change.

I went Saturday and Sunday. Rob is right. Not a challenging course. It was intended to be a cross between a road course and an autox. Saturday was the course Rob described. 105 seconds was the best run by a fully prepped car. The higher times were in the 120's. My best run was in the 110 with my average in 112. Sunday we ran the course backwards with the V element and the pivot cone removed. That made the runway into 2 - 1/8 mile drag strips with a box in the middle. The best run was 50 seconds by the same prepped car. I ran 53 and 54 seconds. The average in group IIG was about 54 seconds. Didn't have enough HP for the long straights to run down the prepped cars and Z06s.

Most of the cars were trailered in. I was the only car in group IG (equivalent to AS). The guys in IIG is where the bulk of the C4's were. They are mostly BSP cars then there is IIIG which would be ASP or SM2 equivalents. More or less. I beat many of the IIG guys and some of the IIIG guys. Including many of the stock C5s in IIH. There are some really good autocrossers in the group but most are road racers.

Saturday things were a little messy. Some officers that were supposed to help with the event didn't make it up from FL. They were training a new person for T&S and Ann ended up auditing. They have a unique format and tried to make a 7 event day instead of the usual 4-5 event day. Each event is 2 runs. They do double laps and that caused them grief because a rerun meant running both laps again. That could have been handled better. Sunday went a lot smoother and we were done and packed up for home by 5pm. When we got ready to leave the last cars were finishing up. They also rented local college kids as course workers and didn't give them enough instruction. By Sunday they got the hang of it. But hey, I didn't have shag cones all day so I was fine with it

So while it could stand more structure and organization it wasn't terrible. Since these folks travel from all over NC, SC, VA, GA, FL, TN and OH they don't care if the event runs until dark. They come to race and won't stop until it is over. See they don't do local club racing. All their events count for Regional, Divisional, and National at the same time.

All in all I had a good time. Did about 25 runs in 2 days, got to see some nice fiberglass cars, and got to meet a bunch of people I've talked to via email and never met in person. Also got some great ideas on what to do and not do if I want to convert my car to a SCCA-BSP/NCCC-IIG class car or worse, IIIG-RP, race prepared

Rob did beat some of the Vettes and quietened a few drivers down. Between the silly grin on his face and the confused look on theirs. That was really funny. Between us we didn't let down the Tarheels Club :D

Oh and Miles, keep the C4 for one more year. I'll probably run AS next year then it's up in the air what I do with the car...

Graham
