Well unfortunately my time in novice class is up so I am wondering if I can get some advice on where I should run now. I guess my options are SS or TIR. Obviously no one runs in SS so this would mean a bump into ASP or SSM. I would like to run in TIR just because there is usually a good turnout in that class, however my .836 PAX  really turns me off of that class. It will be bad enough having a HS car run a better raw time than me then with the PAX its just adding insult to injury. As far as SS I am not sure if my car could even be competitive if it was bumped to ASP or SSM even in the hands of a good driver. Regardless where I go I am sure I will get smoked and I should just focus on continuing to have fun and improving.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

Don't feel so bad. Jake's just kinda nuts in his Hstock GTI. I know that there might be a few guys running ASP more regularly in the coming months, so you won't necessarily get bumped...

There is no reason that you couldn't be quite competitive in SS, ASP, SM2 and Tire class in a stock '99 Corvette.

IMHO, we have the most competitors in SM2 and Tire, so I would pick one of those.

I would leave the car in SS and if you get bumped, then you get bumped. What would you rather boost about...I compete in Super Stock or I race in tire class :)

From a PAX standpoint, you're obviously better off signing up for SS (Open or TIR, depending on your tires) than SM2 or ASP. Even if there's no one else in SS, you'll have the appropriate PAX Index for your set up, so you can get a good idea of how you're doing in the grand scheme by checking the overall PAX results. I don't see any good reason to bump yourself by signing up for SM2, ASP, etc., unless, of course, your car is prepped for those classes.

Thanks for the responses thus far. Sounds like SS might be the best way to go. Just wanted to clarify that when I said a bump to ASP or SM2 I was referring to being bumped into those classes since no one is currently competing in SS. I have no desire to sign up directly for one of those classes as my car is currently stock and it would be silly to prepare it to that level when I am likely only getting 70% out of what it is capable of if that now.

Chris,

Sometimes it can be hard to run in a class where no one is currently running. However, if you go ahead and regularly sign up for SS, you will probably find that encourages other people which could compete in SS to join you. Somebody has to start the ball rolling. If you start out in SS, you may find that you aren't alone for that many events.

If the club would be willing to front me the cash, I would be more than happy to get a Z06 and run SS. I would make that sacrifice for the club's fledgling SS class. That is just the kind of person I am :)

 You are too kind. Its scary thinking what you could do with a Z. I am kind of suprised they have that car in the same class as the regular C5. IMO there is no comparision between the two. I am curious to see where they will put the new C6 and C6 Z06.

You could always let emmett co-drive your car, thus creating two people in SS. Just a thought.

True. He would just kick my arse and make me feel bad though.

I let him take it on a fun run at the Rock and he roughly ran the same time as my best for the day with just one pass in the car.

Chris,

Funny you mention this. Last year was my first year. No one was running AS. After Novice I ran the rest of the season in TIR. This season I was able to talk Miles into running AS then he got Dan to jump in. At one event we actually had about 6 entries in AS. I'm so glad I did AS and not TIR again. I was prepared to deal with being bumped into BSP or SM2. I'll still take that over TIR. PAX will kill you in TIR. You have the wrong car for that game...

Since you are learning it really doesn't make much difference. We have 2 points events left for the season. So pick any class.

Someone has to start the class going. So next year run SS. Then take the bumping as it happens. Sooner or later another C5 will show up. If you're around another year or so you'll have company in SS :P

Graham (reformed TIR class driver)
