Seems to me like a first gen RX7 would be a good choice for ST2.

I just took the weights they had listed. I believe they are for cars with "standard" features but they don't really say. Considering the numbers games most manufactures play, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they were all off a bit. All of the cars have A/C listed as an option FWIW.

I'm still surprised at how close the overall specs for all the cars are. My "wheat" side says the 1.8L Miata is the only way to go but my "frosty" side says do something different!

Big guns? I'm more like a little pee shooter! :P Queue short joke by Vincent...

As usual, I'll probably change my mind next week and try to build something else. Against my better judgment, I can't seem to stay away from the *sp, st* or mod classes. I've got a really stupid idea for an FSP car I can't seem to let go of...

Jim
- who also thinks his stupid FSP car might do well in STS too (with lesser mods of course)

Hmmm. So I'm not the only one to the be the object of Vincent's short jokes...

OK, what's your idea for an FSP car, then Jim?

Maybe Jim's FSP idea is an E21 318i. It's a surprisingly fast little car. A bit porky for FSP but probably OK for ST2.

Or maybe an '83 Corolla?

Having very little experience with Miata's in general and the 2 that I have drove had Torsens. How much wheel spin will you get out of the corners with the open diff/viscous diff 1.8?

Do tell, do tell. Im soooooo freakin' unmotivated here at work right now its not even funny. Construction is sooooo boring on a rainy day, but thats not a bad thing sometimes :) Give me something to read :)

Hey, hey now...I've been trying to tone it down a bit lately Tom. :) Besides now that I have a Miata, I actually wish I was shorter. Then I could get a roll bar and go play with you other NA & NB guys at the HPDE's. Looks like the only way I'll get to do that is cut a hole in the floorpan and have my arse drag the ground.

Sorry to HI-jack the thread guys.

Is there such a thing as an E21 318i in the US? I though all us E21's were 320i's. I've seen a couple of E21 323i's, but both of them were grey market imports. I've also been wrong on almost a daily basis.

Now an E30 318i in full FSP or STS trim might be interesting...

Well, in stock form, you can get a lot of wheelspin, but with the right spring/shock combonation, you can tame a whole lot of it.

My reasoning for the '94+ Miata? Think of the launch alone at a ProSolo. There is no Civic/CRX that will be able to hang with that. ;) - AB

I hear the Geo Metro convertable is going to be the car to have in STS2!!

Why don't you give that one a shot Jim. You would still beat all of us local guys due to your MUCH superior driving ability. (No offense to the other potential STS2 prospects, but the man can drive!!!!!)

It's all good. I throw out plenty of short jokes at myself. I'm like Jim P's Corgis - I'm not short, I'm lowered.

I've heard of folks at tall as 6'5" passing the "broomstick" rule and tracking Miatas, but they do indeed have to make seat allowances.

Since your car is SO nice, I have a suggestion for you to have your cake and eat it too - buy a junkyard Miata drivers seat, pull the seat cover off, and hack away at the seat bottom foam. After you put the cover back on, it even looks halfway decent. You get to keep the cherry M interior, and you can bolt in the hacked up seat and go on track. Supposedly, the hacked seat can give you 2" of additional clearance. If that's not enough, buy the Kirkey road race seat and bolt it straight to the floor - still a decently cheap option.

If I make it to another event soon, sit in my car, but pull the seat bottom cushion out of my Forza first. That should drop you about 2 inches, and we can check how much more you need to drop.

Rumor has it that Vincent was once attacked and brutally beaten by a large herd of circus midgets. Although he is currently repressing the memory, it frequently rears its ugly head as hostility directed towards anybody under 5'10". The best we can do is offer our sympathy and understanding...

:P

I was going to save that one for another thread but you guys already figured it out. I have a lot of data on an '84/'85 318i that seems to point to decent potential in FSP and possibly STS. It would be a gamble but isn't life nothing but a gamble? :)

I think Aaron is dead-on about the wheel spin in the '94+ Miata. While it may always be present to some degree, it certainly isn't something that can't be dealt with.

As a bonus, most of the things you might throw at it to deal with the wheel spin will probably help its transitional response and overall speed in an auto-x setting.

IMHO the reason the MR2 never did that well in stock class were the skinny wheels, 14x5.5 or something of that nature. You can fix that problem in STS.
Scott

FYI The Raymonds (Peter and Dorothy) won DS and DSL in an MR2 in 86 and 88. Jeanne Ross won DSL in 89.

At one time 5.5 inch wheels were not narrow . . . See DS winner in 78 and ASP winner in 86 . . . and all but one C Mod winner since 1990.:D

Jim Williams and I looked into these about a year ago. One possible issue is that there aren't many around. I don't see parts as a problem because you can get your factory parts through the toyota program. They are tiny and would be tough to work on unless you had a lift and were able to figure out the shortcuts. I look at it like this, it's a toyota, you can get cheap parts, and if the car is cheap, go for it. Maybe Jim P will want to start driving your MR2!

I'd like you to take my car for a drive Jim and tell me what you think. I'm listed as 91 HP and 1953 lbs. I have koni yellows installed, azenies, and stainless brake lines... and over 191k miles. Stock alignment setup and it badly needs bushings everywhere but the swaybar. The car is far from being considered a well set-up car.

My long term plans are to stick with this car and eventually turn it into a trailer queen. I'm not interested in nationals, but I am interested in stock, CSP, and the new st* class. I just need to figure out what I can do in each class and make a decision. Oh, it would also be nice to run with competition as well.
