I know a few times in the past Miles Beam was kind enough to lead us into prayer before the close of drivers meeting at a few events. I was just wondering if we could start doing this again. Just a thought. If the prayer was dropped from the meetings for some reason I apologize for opening a can of worms.

This world has more religions and gods than the SCCA has car classes, which one(s) should we be praying to? My feeling is that there are plenty of opportunities for people to pray on their own, and in their own way.

While autocross is often a religious experience, I think it might be best that we let every participant choose to express those feelings privately.

Besides, Shawn already takes too much time in the drivers meeting :)

Besides Triad still has church before their events. We would not want to copy Triad would we.

Steven,

If you feel strongly about it, I personally see no harm in you organizing a prayer gathering prior to the drivers meeting. Make some flyers, spread the word. It might be only one or two to start, but it is a start.

Best bet is to make it non-demonational. If they can lead 120,000 NASCAR fans in pray, you can start a little one prior to your Sunday racing.

I am no religious expert, but I highly doubt that Jesus or any of the others asked permission of an elitist few :)

Jim,

That is a great idea. Of course it would be non demoninational as to make all those who participate feel welcome.

I'll be honest here. I don't practice any religion, and I would think it might make some people feel strange (myself included) if we ran a prayer during the driver's meeting. If something is held, let those that want to pray together do it in any organized fashion if they want, but I don't think that prayer should be seen as an 'autocross' accompanied thing.

I know people might disagree with me, but if the driver's meeting includes a mandatory prayer, call me a sinner, but I'll be at my car listening to music. - AB

I am going to have to agree with Aaron, who would have thought that would happen :D .

If for some reason you feel the need to pray before, or during, an autox then go ahead. Nothing is stopping you, or anyone else for that matter. But as for some kind of organized one not just no, but hell no. It has no place or purpose in what we do and would only serve to take more time and make people uncomfortable. There are entirely too many religons and practices for one to cover them all or not offend someone.

So this doesn't spiral out of control I just wanted to state that I started this thread not to stir the pot, but just as a way of thinking out loud. Like I stated in my first post we did this at a few events in the past and I wanted to gauge interest in doing this again. It seems that the question was answered. Thanks guys, sorry to cause contraversy.

So if a few members wanted to have a prayer meeting prior to or right after the drivers meeting, you would ban it? Maybe the signature of "Nazi" is not far off?

I am not a religious person by any means. Any one that knows me or has been around me, knows that. But I think the attitude displayed by people to slam a suggestion is wrong.

If Steven and others want to have a gathering at an event that does interfer with the event running, I will back them 100%. I probably would not join them. But I would be the muscle to protect their right.

Hell, 60 seconds of silence in a drivers meeting would probably be the most meaningful 60 seconds of the 15 minutes :)

I think what adam and aaron are saying is the same thing that I was thinking. An "organized" one is ok and no one is discouraging it. But do it when the mandatory drivers meeting is over and the people that don't want to be around have left.

Thanks a lot Jim. I understand why some people may oppose this idea. I would not bash them in anyway at all. We are entitled to our own opinions. As for a moment of prayer before the event I would like to just post a flyer on the registration table and have a brief moment for those that want to gather. Of course I will only put the flyer at the table if the officers feel this is ok, and of course this is by all means 100% voluntary.

Although I am not an officer any more, I don't see any problem with this :) - AB
