NCAC 2017 lived up to its hype as the best autocross event in North Carolina. Autocrossers from as far as New York and Atlanta found Runway Foxtrot at the Cherry Point Marine Base. A big thanks to the Marines who lent NCR one of the best autocross sites in the country and who provided lunch and breakfast. NCR has raised the bar for those who will have to host in the upcoming years. They were incredibly well organized from check in to first car off to trophy presentations. With 217 competitors, it was great that the first car off each day was started early. On Saturday night NCR hosted a banquet at the Marine Air Museum at the Havelock Tourist Center. The Millers came very close to having to figure out where to put a concrete Tikki statue in a Miata for the trip home. The raffle prizes were free and very generous. For those that did not attend, make sure to see a trophy from one of our winners. They were clones of the North Carolina license plate with the addition of a flying saucer, class, and position. Course designer, Mike Jones, created two 60 to 70 second courses. The Saturday course egged on the speed in each segment followed by a pinch point on exit. If you looked ahead and stayed smooth, you were well rewarded. Day two's course allowed one to go like hell and hold on. The only thing limiting a quick time was how good your reflexes were and your courage (word replaced). On both days, car placement was critical.
Tarheel had about 18 members competing in a national style autocross competition. Guangming Cui did his best to prove that Porsches are better than Chevys, but alas took second to a Corvette. CS proved to be a slaughter house for THSCC as Tristan McBride, Anders Miller, and Mike Miller took the tail end of the class. GH Sharp trophied in 3rd. DS redeemed us with Andrew Pallotta winning with a borrowed Civic Type R followed by Francis Chan in 5th and Elizabeth in 7th. Eric Peterson took 1st in a loaded ES. Mark Beech did his best with an 11th place finish. Damn all those MR2's! Patrice Bousquet was a one man show winning GS by almost one second in a battle between the GTIs and the Foci. HS was a happy home for Tarheel with Rob Keener winning by 1.6 seconds, Austin and Chad Culbertson getting 6th and 7th respectably followed by Rob Lupella, in a borrowed car, getting 9th and Steven Spampinato at 10th. Steven Carter managed 3rd place in a tough STR class. Carlton Whitehead came in 5th and there is a rumor that Bart Craig was there too. Our ladies excelled. Chris Peterson won in an MR2 followed by Jen, soon not to be Vance, in the Mayllota Miata in 2nd. Maria, soon not to be Mayorga, placed 4th. Since the results have not yet been posted, there is no detail on Top 10 Raw and PAX.
Tarheel was well prepared after a very fast weekend at NCCAR. Tarheel placed 3rd in the North Carolina Club Cup. Congratulations yet again to Triad for showing up with such a power house. CCR was 2nd and NCR was 4th. Thanks to all of the TarHeelers who came down to make this such a fun social and competitive event.
