Anyone have any experience with these? Faster/slower/the same as RE71R's?

Need tires for the mini.

They seem to stack up pretty well according to tire rack. Between the RE-71, Rival S, RS3 V2 they were rated at the bottom though. That's some stiff competition though, so if you're looking to save a few bucks it looks like they would be pretty good.

Anecdotal reviews are not encouraging, slower with significant tread wear and deliamimation in autocross and hpde settings although mostly used on heavy fwd camber limited cars (not exactly relevant in this scenario) I don't know if the available sizes of the Maxxis VR1 fit your mini (205/55/16 and 255/40/17 for now) but they look intriguing for a new entrant to the EHP market if you are dead set against the rival s or re71r.

Edit: Zii * seem to be near the same price range, with $50 visa card from tirerack, including road hazard.

Not dead set against them at all. Probably gonna go easy button and just get the RE71's since I like them so much on the Miata. Just curious if the newest tire to the party has anything unique to bring. Sounds like not so much. . .

Ah, got it. Not much on the horizon for new EHP street tires for this year, based on the SEMA coverage I caught. Maxxis is increasing the available sizing of VR1 through this year, but no real reports of performance vs current top tier tires. Everything else has proven slower than RE71s and RivalS. Maybe next year we hear something from Dunlop and Hankook...

I think the only thing they bring to the party is price and tread splicing.

The V720's have worked well for us so far -- Barber (~16hrs), VIR (~8hrs) on the same set. That's in a 2200lb Honda Civic. (And they still aren't down to the wear bars) Roger did have Tire Rack heat cycle them.

Interesting. We switched back to the old Azenis RT-615K's for Barber because they were cheaper and last longer than the Rivals and/or Star Specs. A quick search shows we could save $53 running the V720's.

At Barber and VIR, I think any of the good tires would work and last, but at CMP, aka The Cheese Grater, the Rivals, and Star Specs didn't hold up for us.

Roger and Ricky are onto something though with the heat cycling by TireRack. Something the Super Westerfield Bros. should look into as I think it would help a lot at places like CMP. - AB

Good to hear! Like I said , IIRC most people who posted bad reviews (and there are only a few, so it's not exactly a rigorous review) were in heavy no-camber FWD cars (not your application) so it could be similar to how the Toyo R1R behaves better on specific lighter cars. Folks also have heat cycled their RE71Rs, and say they wear a lot better than running fresh sticker tires right out of the box. I heat cycled my RE71Rs and have no complaints about the wear.

It seems one has to be careful to make a choice based on the specific vehicle and its intended application as there are 200TW tires that have strengths in enduro racing and 200TW tires that have strength in time attack or autocross, with some better for heavier cars and some only working on lighter cars. Caveat emptor, and all that

edit: on the tirerack website a reviewer posted about V720s delaminating during LeChump races using a 1991 Miata. While just anecdotal, maybe it's not only heavy cars.

I was thinking about running those at the last 24hr Chump as they're dirt cheap. I'm one of the few drivers that like the gummy bear nature of those tires. (they stick but they have a lot of play) I used RS-3's (not heat cycled) and they were amazing at VIR. At CMP, however, the surface just ate them up. (and not being available in 205, they aren't ideal) The ZII's are great, but it's way too easy to over heat them -- and then they're crayons.

Last year at CMP, when our tires disintegrated, and several people (including the Class A and Class B winning cars) did fine on the same tires, we asked around and several teams told us to use the heat cycling service. I guess we'll see next month how well the heat cycled 720's deal with the brutality of CMP.
