Why modify the ECU? The car is already the Car To Have for DS.
The EJ25 in STI form (stock and aggressively-modded) has known issues, but my specific experience with my 09 WRX (58k, owned since new, no aftermarket engine tuning) has not borne that out. yet.
I own a base model, and the only thing I can add is :
(1) stereo is poor
(2) hard plastic interior bits
(3) roof noise during rain can be pretty loud because it's an empty cavity absent the sunroof components.
Don't buy a new car if winter mountain driving is your main concern. Like others have said, buy a beater AWD and keep the vette.
(In an unrelated note, my WRX is always for sale. New tires, Bilsteins, front bar. Jus sayin'....)
To your point of reliability, I have also read about quite a few failures on stock engines. It seem when you beat these car's with oe pistons either stock or modified, you run a pretty good chance the engine will blow. people who switch their pistons for forged seem to complain less, but still lose longevity. There are a lot of internet theories on why this is. ive also read over and over that the stock tune runs the car pretty close to lean conditions. This coupled with the very think ringlands/ weak ringlands seems to be what a large portion of people suspect. I think James Short was starting to experience some problems with his before he dumped it. Another thing I have read is that the lean spot happens just around boost. Going back and forth between boost and no boost, plus the high load/low RPM car's go though during AX dont help. I think people running track seem to complain less about ringland failure but they still go though it as well. Keep in mind there are plenty of people that, like Steven, go 100k's of miles without issue. another thing to remember is for every complaint on the internet, there is at least 10-20 people who are happy. Also, most if this ringland issues seem to be with the 2.5. the new 2.0 i have not been following, but people seem to be having less problems off the newer engine. Still too early to tell.
Im still running mine. I have figured that its just a matter of time before the engine pops. I also figure if I assume its going to happen then I will be less annoyed if it does happen.
As far as the WRX for winter driving in the mnts... dont. Im sure it will do way better then your vette, but if thats the only reason to sell it, buy a cheap Outback. You can get you some nice snow tires for it in a very cheap affordable rim size and not worry about it when someone else slides into you because they cant drive in the snow.
