Especially in the back seat, my neck is still crooked from that short trip on Sunday  Then again, it was the ride in your car that got me thinking about this again.

I like the 05+ Mustangs and will be keeping an eye out for one, but right now I am lusting after the 98-02 Camaro SS. I was in high school/early college when they came out and they just seemed so bad-ass at the time. One problem I am finding is that most of the SS's for sale have had engine/power related mods. It would be nice to find one with a stock drivetrain and autocross/track suspension mods.

Yeah, you were talking about it and then I saw this post, I figured it wasn't coincidence lol.

well, this isn't a V8 pony car, but it would more than fit your needs and haul the kids. TONS of stuff you can do to a 328.... If this is a decent car, the price sure seems right...

Hmm. I don't know anything about those...a buddy of mine had one once, but it was an auto. Other than that, I like the way it drove. Would that be in GS?

I'm not sure where they fall in regard to classing now, but mine originally ran in DS and then STU, but the classes have changed over the years. I know my old one has 234k miles on it and still runs and drives good. That e36 chassis is one of the better platforms BMW created. The car is actually pretty easy to work on. Like I said, there's a crap ton of suspension parts for the those cars. I have a set of H&R lowering springs I'll let go cheap, but you have to run the M3 front struts.

There are some known soft spots on these cars, but all readily addressable. Your 8 grand budget would create a smoking autox car...

Rodney,

Why do you hate Jordan? BMW's long out of warranty? Sounds iffy to me. :?

lol... I don't, but I know these e36 chassis cars are pretty damn reliable cars provided they've been maintained, but that logic works for any car. The e36 is a great handling car. There's a lot of similarities between my current e90 and the old e36. They just "feel good" to drive, very planted car.

Yeah Rodney, why you h8tn? Truth is, I am a "long out of warranty" kind of guy anyway.

Seems like we have discussed this before, but how reliable are the E46 cars compared to E36? Price wise, both are within budget.

About the same. Better headlights, more electronics, heavier. Some people prefer the E46 chassis over the E36, not sure of the finite differences that make this so. Personally, I'm quite fond of the E90 platform but they are still pricey.

Be prepared to replace anything plastic under the hood, particularly the coolant system parts. E46 has an aluminum block versus iron on the E36. Overheat an E46 and you are looking for a new motor.

Be prepared to replace bushings and mounts particularly in the E36. 90K or more miles and these are usually shot.

Not really interested in LT-1 cars, especially when LS-1 cars are near the same price range. I have had my fill convertables too after having the Miata for 16 years :) Other than that, it looks reasonably priced.

Not to mention the convertible pony cars are always heavier and less stiff.

I drove a 2013 Camaro SS convertible for over 1k miles in Arizona on a week long pleasure trip and that things was a pretty big difference compared to my coupe. The whole thing felt a lot more bendy.

Only a Hans-lover would claim the subframe or the strut towers as a maintenance items.
