I'm an engineer and don't really understand any of the neat (and proven) stuff Eric talked about BUT I agree with his bottom line. Keep it simple between runs if there is time and then maybe review data using something like SoloStorm. If you are going to compare lines the GPS data MUST be as accurate as possible or you won't be looking at the actual paths. The DL1 does this very well and it appears the GPS bluetooth module that SoloStorm recommends is also very good. OBDII data is great for getting RPM and throttle position info for after event review unless you need to make a "shift or not shift" decision between runs then SS is useful at the event for that also.

Eric, that is great advice. Athletes always speak of a"zone" or in "flow" with the game, and what you describe is exactly that. Many similarities to golf and other sports in re:visualization, quieting the conscious mind, etc. Thanks!

We got an AIM Solo, Mostly because it was $389 and included a lap time display for track days. I like it better than the phone/tablet solution that we had used before. It's simple and works every time. For video we use a GoPro. If I want to sync the two (and I usually don't), then I use Dashware.

The best thing about the setup is that I can ask someone fast, like Kraig , to drive the car and then compare the logs. I have gained a lot of time in braking zones by going over Kraig's data logs. It is less useful with just me driving, and if I can put four people in the car, then I usually get some very interesting stuff for everyone.

I never use the data at the event. After an event I spend some time looking at the data and find a few areas that I can work on for the next event. Most of the things that I find are throttle and brake timing issues, specifically where I can get off the brake and on the throttle earlier.

I'll bring it to an autocross and you can try it if we ever have an autocross that I can go to. I'm going to try to get to the one in June.
