It's a helicopter not a camera on a zip line. :P

...was thinking the helicopter would hover in a static position (like a camera on a crane) above the course. I don't know the limitations of the device in question, just thought there might be a useful application of the technology beyond swoopy camera angles and following along behind the cars.

Ah, gotcha. We can turn this into a physics problem for Short if we're careful about this, just need to find out the focal length of a GoPro and solve for the height required to cover the entire surface area of the course we would setup.

e: 14mm in the wide mode, that's pretty impressive to be honest

Wouldn't that be a geometry problem?

<< sucks at math

absolutely. Then we can superimpose the FTD driver as a ghost image on top of other drivers to see where they gain/lose time and deviate from the driving line.

That would be great. I saw that for the first time during slalom skiing in the Olympics. I wonder how much a moving camera would complicate the ghost imagery. Seems like the helicopter would have to fly the exact same route and speed for each run (compensating for wind) in order to make it useful.

Either way it sounds really cool. I'm all for it!

I guess the helicopter would hover in this instance?

My buddy did something "similar" on his bike with a dash cam and a butt cam and set the opacity to 50% on both videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwcPC6AX0tA

You can see the difference in the trees and if you're paying close attention to the painted lines.

Involves optics which technically is a Physics 2 subject. But optics is basically all trig and geometry.

I was at a BMW club autocross at the Performance Center a few weeks ago, and a guy there did some drone video. I took the M3 and it shows up some with me and then Jackie driving it. The drone could not come close to keeping up with acceleration off the line the one time it tagged along behind me, but then it followed a 2002tii it was much closer, lol.

Here's the link (for whatever reason, it doesn't work well in Firefox, but views fine in IE):

Speaking of promotion videos, check out this work that by Felipe. He wasn't an autocrosser, but he did a great job in this video. This is from a CCA autocross, Peachtree chapter, a few years ago at Lake Lanier Islands (before they lost this lot :( ). I love the slow motion video he captured of the M5...I overdrove the entry to that slalom and had to use a big dose of throttle to get the tail around.

If we could find someone to do something even close to his work for a THSCC event, that would outstanding!

That's really cool, I need to incorporate that in some videos.

I think its a great idea, but I have to admit my first thought was course worker safety. Something to think about.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.
