Yep, that was it, but it seems like it needs too much stuff. Even if $5700 meant $3500 in some cases...

87 Porsche 944. Limited info but decent price at $3700

or this, '02 Audi TT, 6grand

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ctd/4341902789.html

I test drove an 04 TT when I was looking to buy the Miata. I don't know what chassis platform it was derived from, but it wasn't the same as the late model one that Gwen has. The turbo lag was massive, steering mini van slow, and pushy to boot. Beyond that, it didn't even feel good to drive. It looked cool though. Don't waist your time. I owned a K Car that drove better than the TT.

With all of that said, JT Letkeman finished 2nd twice in a DS 2002 Audi TT ALMS edition at 2006 & 2007 Nationals. While they may not drive like a Miata, they could get it done. I'm not sure the current gen TT is all that "fun" to drive, but that really isn't the point of autocross. The worst feeling car I ever autocrossed was a DS Chrysler Crossfire... that got me 4th at Nationals in 2007. - AB

I've never messed w/ any of those cars, just throwing them out for suggestion, or in the case, humor it seems =) Didn't know they has such crappy reputations.

I never got the big deal with turbo or boost lag. You can have no delay and no power. Or perhaps a little delay and lots of power.

I'm looking at a promising candidate this afternoon. And maybe another tomorrow up in Baltimore if the local car doesn't work out. It's apparently got a big oil leak somewhere near the oil filter - I'm guessing (hoping) it's just the o-ring for that oil cooler. It's something that a Jiffy Lube ( :( ) munged during a routine oil change. Could be an easy fix and end me up with a good car for small money though.

The other car has the sport suspension package already on it, but is in Baltimore. I dunno how I'll get my other car back if I go up there and get that one.

Tonight's car was Kenny Keel's former car. It needed a bit more work than I think I'm prepared to do to one - it threw a P0301 CEL on its way to my visit with it. For now I've passed.

Karl,
Check out the one-way car rental option - shop the various companies on line for best price. I was surprised how cheap it was to rent a car from Hertz one way from RDU to SAV when I bought my M3 in November. I also reserved a car for the trip home, in case the M3 didn't work out. There's no penalty if you don't pick it up, assuming you don't pre-pay.

This one popped up on CL today:

Edit: Oops, it is an automatic.

Here's another. Without pictures he will have a tough time selling. If this car has not at least had the timing belt changed (60k service) then you have a great bargaining chip. Either way, being local with 64k this one may be worth a look.

I would bet a garage would charge nearly $1000 to do the timing belt, water pump, and associated engine seals. No need to tell him you would do it yourself for $150. Also, the engine is non interference so if put it off and pop the belt it won't be a big deal.

Other things you might be able to use for leverage would be a green or brown radiator and I am pretty sure OEM shocks (the non bilsteins) are on a 60k maintenance schedule.

Here's my shakedown schedule leading up to VIR:

Autocross - Feb 2 at VMP

Autocross - Mar 1 at NCCAR
Autocross - Mar 15 in Wilmington
Autocross - Mar 23 in Winston-Salem
Track - April 5 & 6 at VIR

Yes, you should see a lot more of me this year (if you can stand it). :sing:

Didn't make it to Greensboro today - worked on the car all weekend. It's almost done. Worst of all I had to cancel my registration for the 3/1 NCCAR event. Aaaargh! Apparently there was some error reading the calendar. Someone thought March 1st was Sunday. :( I can't believe there is no event within 200 miles on 3/2!

Yeah, I saw that, but I'd really feel more comfortable shaking it down in a couple of Autocrosses with a co-driver (so we get 12 runs on it) before heading to the track.

Have you ever driven Patriot? It's like fast autocross course. Tons of fun in light nimble car.
