Thanks for the great event! Also special thanks to Noah for letting me co-drive the Wankel mobile.

Noah let me use his GoPro and this was my fastest run of the day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iixfNuMz6sI

Thanks, guys..great job! today showed me a couple of things:

1)year-round events are possible, and enjoyable even in cold temps! surprisingly more grip than I expected, although grip under braking was less than I expected. Naturally, handwarmers, thermals and a thermos of hot chocolate go a long way to making those cold days better.

2) my car's set up is not the problem, and can be driven fast. Thanks to the Return of Karl for that!

Thanks Guys and Gals for an awesome event! I was really on the fence when I got up this morning, but so glad I went. With cold tires and a fat rear swaybar, the Mazda6 is incredibly tail-happy - but fun! The LSD rocks!

Gotta little work to do on it, but we'll see y'all again on March 3.

What a blast today! Things went a lot better than I expected after a 1 1/2 year hiatus from the sport. I had some observations too:

1. An STR car doesn't turn in, or brake, with quite the same ferocity as my B-Stock car did on giant Hoosiers. But the balance of the car over an entire course is much more consistent. Steve's car felt pretty lively, but manageable, in sweepers. I was expecting it to be a hellspawn of oversteer in transitions, but not so. Much more consistent over an entire course than my old car ever was in BS trim.

2. STR cars don't brake very well on a frigid day. Apparently the Dunlop drivers were all having the same problem. I just didn't do a very good job being smooth with my braking inputs.

3. It was very cool to see my former car out there, and being very well driven!

4. I dig the real time results via smartphone. But I sure with the latest iOS patch had fixed my rapid battery drain problem. Phone went from 100-0 in about 4 hours. Are we still printing results at all? I never thought to look.

5. Hooray for all at once runs!

6. STR is a tough, deep class.

It was fun to be back. :)

Here is the Dash plaque from the event today. I didn't know how appropriate it would be when I drew it up. :D :D

AND, the heater wasn't working. Even after hacking at the valves before I got in it, the engine just never got hot enough for it to work. After running for 2hrs, I shouldn't be able to place my hands on top of the engine.

And to think, I was supposed to drive that car there Saturday morning. Friday, I looked at WeatherBug and then called Roger and told him to put it on the trailer. A wise choice.

(also, defrost appears to only work on the passenger side. Which is miracle in itself as Robert and I removed the AC core months back, with a hammer and prybar :-) We might've actually fixed that side in the process. I don't recall the defrost working worth s*** at Lemons/CMS.)

60ish attendees I think and several novices too!

It was COLD, but clear and no ice issues (after some successful, yet lengthy efforts to demolish the ice near the finish by Jordan and Shawn)

Enough to make 3 run groups, 6 runs each. Started at 11, finished by 3:00-3:30 or so. The "cool down puddle" at the end of the course was nice because, you know, you don't want the tires to overheat

Hat tip to the de-icers for scraping the ice off the pavement just after the finish cones. Much appreciated!

Fellow STR drivers, watch out for Carlton. wow.

I dunno who was driving the blue Mustang with "NOV" on the side, but whoever it was, that guy looks like he's really good. And I was paying attention, too, because usually when I see an obviously very fast Mustang with "NOV" written on it, I run for cover. :)

I had a great time this weekend, helping out and getting to know folks better. Having been a member of other volunteer organzations, I continue to be impressed with the effort and organization of Tarheel. Special thanks to Brice and Mary for taking the time and having the patience to teach me the basics of the high pressure timing and scoring operation.
