Looks like Triad is considering making large changes to their classing:

I have thought of such a setup before and I kinda like it.

What we could do (without restructuring all our classes) is bump classes that don't have enough entries on a per-event basis to the next class. "One driver, one trophy" always seemed kinda odd to me.

That's what the SCCA rulebook recomends to do. It used to be done "back in the day" but we lost track of it at some point.
Quote:
APPENDIX B - BUMPING ORDER
“Bumping” is not approved for championship events. However, the following
bumping order is recommended for regional events in cases where a
class is to be combined with another class.
The progression of the ladies bumping order shall be: if there is only one
competitor in a Ladies Class, that competitor shall move to the parallel
Open Class. If a class is still not formed, the competitor should then be
bumped into the next appropriate Ladies Class (see diagram). If a class
has still not been formed, the competitor should again be bumped to the
appropriate Open Class. This movement would continue until a class is
formed.
Example: HSL entrant(s) bump to HS, then HSL entrant(s) to GSL, then
HSL entrant(s) to GS, then HSL entrant(s) to DSL, etc. Also, Ladies Class
entrants should be bumped first to create a class. Example: If there is only
one entrant in each of the three classes CS, DS, and DSL, the entrant in
DSL would be bumped into DS first to form a DS class and the CS entrant
would then be bumped upward into BS (i.e., it would not be correct to
bump the DS entrant into CS before considering the DSL entrant).
Proceed left to right following the arrows, until a class is formed. Where
two bumping paths come together (including Ladies-to-Open bumps), all
bumps up to the joining point should be done before continuing along the
bump path.

I think bumping is a great idea. Minimum 2 participants per class, ensures everyone gets some competition. However, I'm very much against the Triad proposal. I assume that they would be using pax for the class combinations..

..and everybody knows PAX SUX.

Looks like SCCA needs to update their Modified bump paths.

EM, DM, and FM are now faster than CM at the national level and have a tougher PAX index.

Stock Class bumping seems like a workable idea to me as well.

Just thinking out loud, we could bump Stock classes together based on relative parity of PAX values into 3 groups. Based on 2013 PAX we could bump SS/AS/BS into Bump1, CS/DS/ES/FS into Bump 2 and GS/HS into Bump 3. Ditto *SP.

(also thinks it's silly to have 10 classes with 1-2 entrants)

We used to bump people to other classes.

Marcus is right we used to bump for trophies. You still got your points in class for year end.

As far as Triad is concerned They are coming full circle. When I started running Auto-X Triad had their own classes with lots of things free in stock class. Back then my bone stock 510 ran against a MGB with weber sidedraft carbs and almost full race suspension.

I'm a fan of bumping to make a class of at least 2. I'd also be a fan of PAX bumping, as in if you are in GS and you get bumped to SS, that combined class would compete on pax times. I'm sure that it would be logistically impossible so I'm not saying we should do it.

Well, as long as you thought of it first, then we can talk about it :)

It might work if you use the PAX times to pick the winners of the nine classes. Even if, as I read somewhere lately, the PAX is "not ideal".

But for THSCC next year, the most I'd suggest is re-instating the bumping rules in the non-RT classes. As much as I like all the little oranges cones on the magnets stuck on my refrigerator door, it doesn't mean much to run unopposed.

We used to bump and at some point we stopped doing it. I agree a winner of a one horse race is kind of pointless. Bumping a 1 car up a class and then paxing them is OK.

PAX still sucks
