So I fixed the timing box. Fuse holder joint broke due to the swapping and the fact that the hold down nut was loose so the whole holder was spinning. I secured the holder and resoldered the connector.

Pink timing cable is going to be a doozy. There was a short between the black conductor and the ground conductor so I chopped the heads of and it was still there :(. So there is a short between the two ends. So it had to have happened between cleaning up at Piedmont and setup at NCCAR. Was there any slamming of wire in a door or driving over it this weekend?

I'm going to start unwinding it and looking for bad spots and chopping and then retesting. Unfortunately the bad spot might be closer to the inner head meaning I will have trial and error-ed to the point of completely wasting the whole cable.

So we only lost 25%-33% of the pink cable. The rest is going to have a single splice in it which I'm not enthused about, but better than only have half the length of it. I found 2 suspect areas on the length and marked them with blue tape. Then cut the one closest to the outer end and still had a short but the part I cut off was good. Then I cut the inner part and the part still on the spool was good so it was the middle section that is messed up but nothing obvious from the outside. I don't think it is worth trying to figure out where the actual damage is because I don't want a cable with 2 splices (reliability).

So on that note, recommendations for splicing? I was going to butt solder the ends, wrap the two insulated ends liberally with electric tape, fold everything about 6" and then put a layer or two of heat shrink on the folded section. Thoughts?

Well I did as I described with the pink wire. Given the folding, there is no direct tension on the soldered joints. Hopefully it works out for us for a while.
