Tarheel Sports Car Club’s 2012 autocross season official kicks off February 19th in Laurinburg with our annual Test & Tune at the old Laurinburg-Maxton airport. We are planning to have an exciting mix of various elements that we’ll see on our 2012 courses. We will be unofficially utilizing the timing equipment as we have in the past, but we may be mixing things up a bit from the traditional two course setup, perhaps linking the two morning courses together for the afternoon, changing up the course(s), or moving the timing equipment to the second course for the afternoon sessions. Details to come soon but it should be a great time to shake off the dust and test all of our new off-season upgrades, tweaks, and modifications regardless of what you’re driving. Please keep in mind that you will experience a little more tire wear than a typical autocross event.

For those attending their first Test & Tune with us, be prepared for some serious seat time and expect to see about 20-30 runs for the day to dial the car in or get familiar with your brand new or ‘new to you’ car before the first points event in March.

We could use a few (3-4) extra volunteers on setup day to clear a bit of grass, weeds, and brush from the tarmac. So if you don’t mind spending a little time on a Saturday afternoon to help out (and possibly have an extra shovel or weedeater), drop a line to autocross@thscc.com to volunteer.

We’re planning on issuing Annual Tech stickers so please be sure to print and fill out the form if you would like to get this knocked out for the year:
http://thscc.com/autocross/forms/axannualtech.pdf

Please keep in mind that only helmets rated M, K, or SA dated “2000” or newer, open face or closed face, are acceptable. Also, “DOT ONLY” helmets are not permitted with THSCC.

We strongly recommend using Paypal for registration which opens tomorrow (2/3/12) afternoon and prices are $25 preregistered for THSCC members or local area club members (just bring along membership card if you could) or $35 on the day of the event.

Hope to see you there!!!

I'm thinking the afternoon "linked" course will be very similar to the non-pts autox there a few months ago. There were lots of positive comments on that one, in case you missed it.

For the morning, there will be a left and right course, with the left being more slalomy and the right being more not slalomy. Probably timing the right side in the morning.

I should be able to come down and help setup

I'm coming straight from the TN/NC mountain region Saturday morning, will shoot to be at Laurinburg between noon and 1pm. PM me if you don't have my phone number in case we need to get in touch that day.

As for course, I was thinking (if weeds/etc permit) we could have the traditional two courses in the morning, one timed one not, then in the afternoon link them together into a single, longer, timed course.

So any chance we can find room for a skidpad? I plan to adjust camber and swaybars based on tire temps. I have a friend (hopefully future member) coming to help with the pyrometer, note-taking and wrenching. I'll bring my own push broom to clean a spot - I'm not asking the EC to setup anything special for me - just gimme 20 cones and tell me where to go (pun intended :)). Certainly, if someone else wants to use it - the more the merrier. My experience is most folks aren't interested.

I was hoping to volunteer for set up on Saturday, but my friend can't leave til Sunday AM. We plan to be there by 9AM - Skidpad tune in the morning and Auto-X test in the afternoon. Wadaya think?

IIRC, there's not room for a properly sized skid pad. We were able to set up a small pad one year, but all it really seemed to do was chew up the front tires due to the tight turning radius.

We actually had a decent size skid pad at the 2010 test and tune down at the very far end by golden knights. Like Cash said though, it didn't get much use I don't recall. It was also right where we ended the course at the non-points event end of last year.

I recall years ago when I was tuning my SHO, I was able to set up a 100' pad at one end - don't recall which end. Bigger is always better, but 100' will get the job done.

At the TNT last year or year before, I trashed a set of decent rear tires on the stang doing the "skid pad", to the point of going "OMG, can I make it home". That concrete is NOT kind to tires and acts just like a cheese grater.
