I couldn't connect from down where I was handing out time slips. If I could have, that would have rocked. That is, if it had been updated so that I could have read the times for each driver as he came through. Not an issue however, and I'm grateful for the work that went into producing the app. Thanks.

Gwen

I also heard reports of successfully using it from the pit area.

What is the make and model of the wireless router?

It's a DD-WRT flashed WRT54G if I remember correctly.

The reason I was asking was that I was thinking of an external antenna that could be set on top of the bus and likely greatly extend the range. I assume the router will take a typical ext antenna. I think there are some inexpensive magnetic mount antennas available.

I've enabled the bug tracker on the launchpad project and entered all the software-related bugs I could remember. I'm going to code some fixes this weekend. If you had any trouble with the software (not counting infrastructure issues like wireless range), please check out the bug tracker and submit a report if the issue isn't listed yet.

Following Points #2, it's apparent to me that there is still some work left to do with the Autocross Instant Results (AxIr) software.

I believe it was Noah who donated the new Timing & Scoring laptop that we used for the first time at Points #2. Thanks Noah, it's a huge improvement over the old one! I spent the morning moving the AxIr software from the old laptop over to the new one, and got it up and running just in time for Mary to start setting up the AXware file for the EV challenge autocross.

There was an issue with AXware on Windows 7 that prevented our points event from being able to save properly. I think we can chalk that up to a Windows XP -> Windows 7 migration issue. Since AXware wasn't able to save its file for most of the first heat of our points event, that's why it wasn't showing up in AxIr.

There was another issue where the Raw and PAX times would show 0.000 as the fastest run (who brought their teleporter???) for any driver with a DNF. This is definitely on my bug list to fix.

Another issue came up with the classing/category results where tircs, tirbs, tirhs, etc, were being treated as separate classes instead of all falling under TIR category. This was due to the classes being entered into AXware in lower case. All of the sample files that I collected from the old laptop had them all in upper case (TIRHS, etc), and I never thought to handle that. Also on my bug list to fix.

The current version of the AxIr also has a major achilles heel in requiring the AXware operator to manually save the file frequently. I noticed that AXware is constantly updating another file, but it's structured a little differently, and there might be some file locking issues that come into play if I change AxIr to read it instead of the one it's using now. I'm going to look into reading that file, and I will be testing thoroughly with a copy of AXware. However, I don't have any samples of those files from our past events to test with. If someone can either give me the laptop for a day or upload the *.st1_log files to me, that would really really help.

Any benefit to running AXWare on WIN7 via compatibility mode for XPSP2?

I think it's just a permissions issue. We probably should move the AXware's event data out of Program Files to somewhere more appropriate. It should probably go in a folder directly under the C drive, so AxIr (Apache running as the apacheservice user with limited permissions) can see it without too much permissions hassles.

Depending on how the computer is set up, you'll probably wind up with issues trying to write to the root of the C:. A folder under the root should work, but putting the data in C:\Users\$User\Documents should work as well.

I was thinking something like C:\AXwareData\ would be a good place to point it. I'd really like to avoid granting the apache service account any access into the user's profile, let alone the Documents folder.

We should have a brainstorming session with you, Noah, and I about best ways to set all this stuff up. I think between us we can come up with some great ways to improve the THSCC IT systems!

Happy to help out!

I just finished coding some fixes for the issues that came up at the last event. It turns out there are some differences in the way the new version of AXware writes its statefiles that caused both the issues that came up (DNFs had 0.000s times, categories weren't found in class names "tircs", etc). Pass out time now.

I should probably take another look at my fixes in the morning after I've had some coffee.
