so there will be a course set up on the test track at NCCAR then?

do ya'll plan on making it challenging with line of sight trickery or has common sense intervened and ya'll might have a fast, safe and FUN course?

yeah, i know. some of you guys think a nine cone decreasing slalom is fun. so is rush hour traffic in Hong Kong i'd be willing to beat, but the scenery is way different. and i would much prefer to mow down rickshaws over cones.

:soap: cones suck.

Again if you don't like Autocross don't attend. Yes, some of do like decreasing/increasing/static slaloms and gates and lane changes and offsets and pivot cones....well unless you are Kevin Allen you probably don't like pivot cones. I think I'll get drunk, go on the Lemons/chump forums and start posting about how stupid it is to go around in circles in beat up "racecars" and how far it is to get to events that I won't go to anyway and about the cost of safety equipment and the dopey rules and the attitude of the "racers" and blah blah blah

but Uncle Rob, if you didn't constantly remind me of how tiresome and pointless my rants about AutoX were i might not have any motivation to continue with them. but alas, i bait the hook and you swallow it.

but let's look at this another way. with attendance dropping like a rock, and forum participation at what has to be an all time low, (think about whom you no longer see posts from) maybe i am the voice of the silent ranks fleeing the activity.

i have never attended an AutoX with any other group, but i have watched video from other groups. typically, THSCC sets up a course that is a "Sea-O-Cones" with the intent by the Event Chair to handicap some part of the competition by limiting a particular cars strengths or weaknesses.

you wait my Z06 driving compadre, you will be back with that Miata of yours by mid season.

granted the Sea-O-Cones mindset may not be what it once was but i guess with the talent pool available within THSCC that is somehow a challenge and thusly an equalizer.

or maybe i'm the only one that has ever felt this way................... :whoknows:

Well, one of the reasons I stopped autoxing for a while there was the painful/ sea-of-cones courses that weren't fun at all. Hardcore autoxers loved them because it was a "challenge" - fuck that, I want to have fun while being challenged. If I'm not having fun, I'm going to stop showing up.

You may not have noticed, since you don't actually attend autoxes  but lately the courses have been pretty damn fun. We have some good course designers, who actually enjoy the driving part (not just the competition) and aren't out to screw over the people who showed up to play.

And Rob, the S2000 is just as much fun around pivot cones than the STi (and a whole lot more precise) - I don't see how anyone who doesn't drive a boat could hate them.

I did enjoy the first NCCAR course. Would have been faster had my car not been an automatic.

Nobody enjoys a sea of cones. N O B O D Y

Its not as easy to design a course as one might think. Every course starts with good intentions, some end up better than others. I'd encourage you to give it a shot this year.

I agree. That course was damn close to perfect as far a good mix of elements and grip was unbelievable. Nice work to the EC's.

Kevin's right though, we really made an effort to use less cones this year because it's easy for everyone, visually and as far as course design and cleanup. Maybe we should take 20% of the cones out of the bus.

Steve, *if* you wouldn't mind spending about 3-4 hours the day before one of the events this year to design and chair, you're welcomed to. It's pretty easy actually and as I said at the meeting, you get to hear all the compliments (or criticisms) about it when the event's a wrap. I'm only 1/2 joking btw.

(VP plug for EC's this year): Do it if you haven't tried it yet. It's fun!

Wow. We didn't even know what we were doing! FWIW I liked the second NCCAR course better.

To be fair Zack, the course as it was FIRST set up was PAINFUL. The end result was quite fun though.

i think you are unfairly categorizing me Zach. i am a cynical old bastard. fun to me might just be getting out of bed in the morning without a sore back. autocross is fun to a point. to paraphrase Cline, it is relative to the amount of fun your are accustomed too. once you get a taste of "that smell" you don't quite enjoy your old habits quite so much.

the course at the first NCCAR event flowed well and was fairly fast. HOWEVER, as it had a pivot cone and i was in an E90 with an automatic i easily left two seconds on the table while the transmission decided to pick a gear. steptronic is not really designed for hole shots in second gear when winding down from third or even fourth gear.

congrats on your course design. may the forces of a channelled Jim P Rage never walk thru your set-up day.
